Redskins Are Welcomed Back In Style

Posted by Brian Tinsman on August 24, 2011 – 4:09 pm

Today was the 50th annual Redskins Welcome Home Luncheon, held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.  Players were dressed to the nines and were welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd of Redskins fans and alumni.

Here is a video of the address by general manager Bruce Allen, followed by the player introductions (set to the tune of “Enter Sandman”), as read by the FedExField public address announcer, Mark Kessler:

Don’t read anything into the order of introductions–it was an alphabetical list by position.

The biggest rounds of applause were reserved for superstars Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, DeAngelo Hall and London Fletcher.  But it was also great to hear the support for hard-nosed fan-favorites Brandon Banks and Lorenzo Alexander.

The fans in attendance were also entertained by members of the Redskins Marching Band, who–of course–played a certain Redskins anthem:

It was pretty neat, that even in a formal setting, half the room pumped their fists in time with the line, “Fight! For all D.C.!”

Members of the Redskins Cheerleaders were also in attendance to meet and greet before the meal, and members of the Redskins Cheerleaders Alumni Association helped to conduct the silent auction.  The Hogettes were out in force today, and there were dozens of alumni at the table in the front of the room.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan had a really important day, given that it was also his 59th birthday today.

Much more from the event to come.

Great coverage Brian. Is it me, or does Cooley look like he has lost a lot of weight?

It’s an interesting observation, and I wouldn’t say that he’s lost a lot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s lost some. He’s been dealing with injuries in his lower body and that does two things: 1-keeps you from building muscle like you want to going into the season and 2- it makes you want to lose weight to reduce the pressure. I wouldn’t say it’s significant if he has, but it’s certainly possible. Official weights don’t come out for a couple more weeks though, I’ll keep you posted.
