The best part of my job is that it gives me license to talk to not only the players, but also the fans. And as far as Redskins fans are concerned, there are more characters than Disney World.
Going into the crowds today, I talked to people from 12 different states, including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Iowa. I talked to casual fans, I talked to super fans, I talked to fans of four other NFL teams that “just wanted to see what was up.”
Right. To those fans, I said, “Stay awhile, you just might like what you see.”
Here’s a recap of awesome fans that showed up to the practice:
This is Jourdan Simpson, one of the younger fans on-hand today. He was there on his mother’s shoulders, and his father, Eric, was holding Jourdan’s brother. Eric said that he had cut Jourdan’s hair into this awesome ‘do this morning.
He also admitted “I would’ve cut this one’s hair too,” looking at his other son, “but Jourdan was the only one would would sit still long enough.”
I wonder what he would charge to freshen up my cut before the Steelers game?
These are the moccasins worn by a friend of fullback Kevin Gidrey. While Gidrey was out on the field, this man was watching his kid on the sideline. It’s not easy to pull these shoes off, but he was rocking them.
As a recent obsess-er of special teams, I stopped by the field goal challenge to scout the next generation of kickers. The first boy booted a ball that went about 20 feet off to the left and into the woods.
I offered him a contract for the Cowboys.
I was in the process of coming back to the tent to upload video, when I encountered the misting fans. After 10 minutes in front of the fan, I was half soaked, but delighted.
Please note in this photo that the boy is wearing a No. 82 Antwaan Randel El jersey. This boy should be given permission to boo him first as he comes out of the tunnel on Friday.
I’m just saying.
[***UPDATE: Antwaan Randle El was released by the Steelers last week. There goes my fun.***]
I also had a great chat with Terry who works security at FedExField. She’s a lifelong fan and she’s going into her ninth season with the team. I asked her what she thought of the team this year, and said she loved the atmosphere around the Park so far.
Much more to come…
