If Chris Neild were a wizard (more Gandalf than Dumbledore), his magical powers would be stuffing the opposition’s running game and growing facial hair. In that order.
Neild came to the Redskins via the second-to-last overall pick in the draft, but this man is no Mr. Irrelevant. Despite the additions of Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen, Neild can play his way onto the team in a reserve role.
And he’s going to do it all with his signature beard. A former version of his beard is pictured below, via twitter:
His current growth is somewhere between the two, and is something that no heat wave could make him cut.
“It’s going good, I’m letting it grow out through the remainder of camp,” he reported. “It’s not itching now, so that’s a good thing.”
Phew. And fear not, I promise to update the blog if that changes. But Chris, with a facial-flow so impressive, how does one care for it?
“Well, I need to be taking better care of it,” he admitted. “I’ve been keeping it clean, trying to take care of it. I gotta use the right kind of shampoo. As of right now, I’m using the hotel shampoo. I let it sit in there for a couple minutes and it gets pretty smooth, so it’s working out for me.”
“And it’s free.”
I like this guy.
The flip-side of his hair style is that he’s clean shaven on top. The August sun is not kind to such exposed skin, but don’t worry, Neild comes prepared:
“Well, for the afternoon practices, we don’t wear helmets, so I can’t really go around here with no sunblock on.”
Indeed. I can’t wait to see the Redskins back in the postseason, just to see what this guy can accomplish with a playoff beard.
Hygiene aside, Neild has looked good out on the field so far, and has benefited from the lack of competition available to rotate through the line. He knows that once Thursday rolls around, it’s going to be tough to get reps, but he’s putting in the time now.
Just go with the flow, Chris.
