ESPN Admires Mike Shanahan’s Gameface

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2011 – 3:03 pm

As part of ESPN.com’s “Best Of The NFL” Week, ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano hands out some best-of awards to the NFC East coaches. The Eagles take Best Coach/GM Tandem and Best Delegator, Jason Garrett gets Best Motivator, and Tom Coughlin gets Best At Telling It Like It Is.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, meanwhile, takes Best Gameface. Here’s Graziano’s rationale:

I don’t know whether he practiced it in front of a mirror for years, whether it was taught to him by a coaching mentor or whether it just comes naturally. But of the NFC East coaches, none looks more serious, more in control or more intimidating with that headset on than the Redskins’ Shanahan does. His angry scowl beats out Coughlin’s exasperated fury, though I have to admit I did consider the latter.

I think Graziano made the right choice, because Shanahan can do exasperated fury, too. In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s what the picture at the top of this post is.

I’ll be honest, though: one of my main hopes for the upcoming season is that Shanahan will have less occasion to do EITHER exasperated fury OR angry scowl. I’d give up the Best Gameface award for a few games of happy, grinning, Mike Shanahan.

I wish the redskins would have fired both of the Shanahan’s and replace with a decent coach and coordinator. They kept saying we need to pick a new quarterback long before the season was ending. Did he pick a new quarterback? Di he? No, because he is going to loose another season, because he does not have a great quarterback. What was Mike thinking. I hope Dan Snyder deceides to let the Shananhans go next season even through he has three more years. I hop they lose bi time and no more Shanahans. Send Kyle back to Houston and Mike back to Denver. Why didn’t he get John Elway to help with the quarterbacks. You might have had a better season , but no do it the Shanahan way. We will not have a good season until the Redskins have a Great, Great, Great, Great Coach,Coach, Coach, and a great quarterback. Mr. Shanahan expected to turn the team around in 1 year. That’s Bull!!!!!! It takes time to get a whole team to rally around and have what it takes for a time to win. The Redskins have 2 not great quarterbacks and he expects playoff berth or superbowl bound. You know if he doesn’t shape up Mr. Snyder will say bye bye to the Shanahans. Yea, that would be great. The last year we had Jim ZOrn we have won more games. Come on now, what is Shanahan thinking that with getting new players who need to learn a new system, who are use to another and it takes time, takes time, but Mr. Shananahan, thinks in 1 day the team has it all. What is he thinking? I hope The Shananhans get fired next season. Bring in a coach like Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, and fire Snyder and wthe Redskins will have a Lombardi team like it use to be years ago. He was stupid for getting rid of McNnabb, it takes time to get use to a whole new system and it takes a least 2 years or more to get a team in Superbowl form. I just hope they lose so new of everyting.
