Work Begins On The Other Side Of FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2011 – 4:48 pm

Just when you thought this blog was done with pictures of cranes and dangling concrete and empty space where seats used to be, work begins on the east side of FedExField. As always, click the photos to enlarge — the images really are much more noteworthy at the bigger size — and head here for the backstory on the construction.

ESPN Admires Mike Shanahan’s Gameface

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2011 – 3:03 pm

As part of ESPN.com’s “Best Of The NFL” Week, ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano hands out some best-of awards to the NFC East coaches. The Eagles take Best Coach/GM Tandem and Best Delegator, Jason Garrett gets Best Motivator, and Tom Coughlin gets Best At Telling It Like It Is.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, meanwhile, takes Best Gameface. Here’s Graziano’s rationale: Read more »

Chris Samuels In Japan, 2002

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2011 – 2:00 pm

Every so often here at Redskins Park, you can open a drawer that’s somehow been ignored for years or a box that’s been in storage forever and find something completely awesome. These pictures would be among those somethings.

Most Redskins fans remember Osaka pretty clearly. That’s where the American Bowl was played during the 2002 preseason, the one night when Steve Spurrier’s offense really lived up to the hype before coming brutally back to earth during the regular season. Osaka is now a shorthand warning for Redskins fans not to take the preseason too seriously, and many of the stories from that trip have been told.

These images, though, don’t come from the trip itself. Then-young offensive lineman Chris Samuels and then-49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia went on an advance promotional trip to Osaka in March of that year to help drum up enthusiasm for the game. The trip included visits to a baseball game and a sumo match, school visits, press conferences, and at least one appearance at a retail store. The resulting images and press clips were collected in a binder commemorating NFL ON TOUR: Osaka 2002, which is where I came across them.

These pictures were new to me, and I didn’t notice any record of them online so I’m hoping they’ll be fairly new to everyone else.

Here, for example, are Samuels and Garcia at a sumo match:

And here they are with a sumo wrestler: Read more »

Brian Orakpo Has A Superfan

Posted by Ryan Gracia on June 29, 2011 – 12:05 pm

Ryan Gracia finds a Brian Orakpo superfan on Twitter.

Nothing shows your support for a Redskins player like having their last name plastered onto the license plate of your car.

Just ask Brian Orakpo‘s superfan, Ronnie Eubanks, who made it clear who he roots for every Sunday during the NFL season. And he didn’t stop until his favorite linebacker knew it, too.

Eubanks ultimately got his retweet from Orakpo, so presumably everyone’s happy.

Chris Neild Is Tweeting From The Rookie Seminar

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2011 – 9:41 am

If Redskins seventh-round draft choice Chris Neild‘s tweets are anything to go by, he probaby heard Joe Gibbs speak yesterday. Neild is apparently down in Florida for the decertified NFLPA’s “Business Of Football: Rookie Edition” seminar, where Gibbs gave a presentation on money management. But it was today’s speakers that prompted Neild to tweet a picture: DeMaurice Smith of the NFLPA and Roger Goodell of the NFL, sitting side by side on the podium, addressing the rookies together.

And Neild isn’t the only Redskins draft pick who seems to be in attendance: the @NFLPA_Photos twitter account also caught Ryan Kerrigan alongside Blaine Gabbert yesterday afternoon. Read more »
