That’s former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs addressing a group of NFL rookies in Bradenton, Florida, about the dangers of poor financial management. Gibbs himself made some financial missteps earlier in his career (which he covers at length in his autobiography), and — following his second coaching stint — decided to do something to prevent newly-wealthy draftees from making similar errors.
And, according to a USA Today story by Nate Davis, Gibbs tried out his theory on the Redskins before taking the show to Florida.
Even in retirement – Gibbs stepped down from his second stint with the Redskins after the 2007 season – he remained bothered that so many players were flirting with fiscal ruin. So he reached out to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and head coach Mike Shanahan last year and married them up with his associates at Strayer University, people who were financially linked to his NASCAR teams.
Gibbs thought their money-managing acumen could help the Washington players.
“We did kind of a pilot study with the Redskins,” he says. “I really felt like the guys that participated really, really benefited. They were really excited about it. Having seen that, I starting thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could take this throughout the league.'”
The seminar in Florida represents the start of that process.

Surprise! Joe Gibbs — the self-proclaimed biggest Redskins fan in the world — is optimistic that Mike Shanahan and the Redskins are on the right track heading into 2011, according to a sidebar piece also by USA Today’s Davis.
WaPo’s Mike Jones has a terrific story on second-round draft pick Jarvis Jenkins, which is also pretty optimistic.

Greg Brosh at Fantasy Knuckleheads is optimistic about fourth-round draft choice RB Roy Helu as a fantasy football sleeper.
And in case all that relentless optimism is too much for you, here’s a Bleacher Report piece from Paul Gugino explaining why the Redskins are going to be awful in 2011. You know, just to keep things balanced out.
