Redskins Charitable Foundation Awards Scholarship

Posted by Matt Terl on May 27, 2011 – 11:04 am

This is Yasmine Arrington, a high school student at Benjamin Banneker High School in D.C., giving the keynote address at the Womanifesting In Action panel discussion this past March.

Yesterday, Arrington received a phone call from Daniel Snyder letting her know that she would be the recpient of this year’s $25,000 Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund college scholarship — and that he would be matching the $5,000 she raised this year through her ScholarCHIPS program (which provides college scholarships to high school seniors with an incarcerated parent).

“It was the right thing to do,” Snyder said, “and it was an opportunity to do what we really should do.”

This is the third year the Foundation has awarded the scholarship (you might remember future bilingual pediatrician Kiana Hardy from last year).

“I think it’s developing to be a staple of our charity activities, and of the charitable foundation,” Snyder said. “And now that you’ve got an opportunity to do more, we’re gonna be doing that.”

The question, Snyder said, is of what else the team and its Charitable Foundation can do. “One of the things we want,” Snyder said, “is we want input from the community out there about what else we should be doing with the charity organization. Obviously we have reading programs, obviously we have mentoring programs, we have field programs, and athletics, and so on. But what else should we do for the community?”
