Redskins Cheerleaders And Limping Devils At The Calendar Shoot

Posted by Matt Terl on May 24, 2011 – 4:23 pm

Redskins Blog travel correspondent Jordan Beane checks in again from the Redskins Cheerleaders calendar shoot in Punta Cana, D.R.

For reports from the cheerleaders themselves, be sure to check out their blog on Redskins Rule. For even more, including (I believe) some exclusive photos from the calendar shoot, download the Official Redskins Cheerleader App. Until then, though, here’s Beane.

There’s a fairly simply formula for most calendar shoots here in the Dominican Republic. One beautiful girl plus water, sun and sand equals a gorgeous shot. Repeat. It’s a proven winner. However all good photographers need to be willing to change their plans at a moment’s notice.

Like when these guys show up. (Click photos to enlarge.)

The masked men dancing with Redskins cheerleader Emerald are two Diablos Cojuelos, the most popular costumes worn during the Dominican Republic’s Carnival. Dressed up to “symbolize the opposite, a world upside”, they also really add something to a calendar shoot.

The Return of Chris Neild’s Epic Beard?

Posted by Brian Tinsman on May 24, 2011 – 3:54 pm

Redskins.com intern Brian Tinsman gives us this update on Redskins seventh-round pick Chris Neild, and also invents the “epic beards” tag.

What do Merlin, Chuck Norris, and Chris Neild have in common? Not much, really, but they all sport some serious facial hair. Or, they did, until Day 3 of the 2011 NFL Draft.

It was on this fateful Saturday that Neild fulfilled a promise to shave his beard off after he was selected with the 253rd overall pick. Here’s the deed, via his twitter account (@TruckNeild):

After today’s player-only workouts, Neild talked to 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) about his infamous “Mountain-Man” look.

Redskins Players Need Passports

Redskins.com

The distractions seem never-ending during this NFL offseason.

As we all know, people within the Redskins organization – like everyone else who is engrossed in all things NFL – must deal with the effects of the current labor situation. But now Bruce Allen has recently brought another important situation into the light – one that Redskins players may not be as familiar with.

Passports.

On October 30, 2011, the Redskins will be visitors to the Buffalo Bills’ recent one-game-per-(regular)season home stadium located in Toronto, Canada.

NFL.com Celebrates a Crushing Redskins Defeat

Posted by Brian Tinsman on May 24, 2011 – 12:50 pm

Redskins.com

Football analyst Elliot Harrison of the NFL Network’s Red Zone Channel recently began compiling his top-20 games of the 2010 NFL season. At No. 18 he remembers a game that many Redskins fans would like to forget: a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Texans in Week 2.

Harrison justifies this game’s inclusion, saying:

This interconference meeting was an offensive explosion of the highest order. And any time you have a game in which one guy can take over, or a tandem — like Schaub and Johnson — it adds to the experience. Especially with a guy like Johnson, who is one of the most dominant players in the NFL.

Despite the fact neither would be a playoff team, all of the deep balls and the crowd going crazy for four hours made this an easy inclusion into our top 20.

Regardless of the outcome for Washington, Harrison is dead-on in picking this game, which bore some historical significance for the NFL. Here are some observations that put the game in context: Read more »

Neal Olkewicz Talks Terps On The Golf Course

Posted by Ross Leonhart on May 24, 2011 – 11:11 am

Redskins.com intern Ross Leonhart is — like me, Larry Michael, and cornerback Kevin Barnes — a University of Maryland guy. He’s also a Redskins fan. So he seemed like a natural choice to talk to Terrapins and Redskins great Neal Olkewicz at the Mickey Steele Golf Celebrity Golf Tournament.

History wasn’t my best class, so I’m still learning about people and events that came before I was born. For example, despite being a proud Terp and a lifelong Redskins fan, I can’t necessarily pick linebacker Neil Olkewicz out of a crowd. But one thing I can recognize is the logo of iconic College Park bar R.J. Bentley’s, which Olkewicz was proudly sporting on his golf shirt at Friday’s 7th Annual Mickey Steele Celebrity Golf Tournament in Queenstown, Md.

Olkewicz joined the Redskins in 1979 after graduating from University of Maryland, where he established himself as a force at middle linebacker.

In his senior season at Maryland, the middle linebacker set the single-season record for tackles with 188. To put that in perspective, Alex Wujciak, the hugely productive middle linebacker for the Terps of the last few years (last mentioned on the blog here), would have needed to add three (or four, or five) more games to his best season in 2008 (133 tackles) to catch Olkewicz’s record. Olkewicz’s 138 tackle junior campaign is also in the record books, tied for 19th all-time.

At 54 years old, Olkewicz can’t contribute on the field anymore, but he still keeps a careful eye on his alma mater’s teams. He used to attend almost every football game until a recent move back to his native Philadelphia, and I was curious to hear his thoughts on the recent coaching changes. Read more »

Lorenzo Alexander, Firefighter

Posted by Matt Terl on May 24, 2011 – 9:02 am

Lorenzo Alexander has never been one to shy away from a challenge, and he’s always been one who likes to contribute to his community. So it shouldn’t really be a surprise that Alexander would use this time of labor uncertainty to find out exactly what firefighters go through — axes, facemasks, iconic hats, hoses, and all. FOX5’s Dave Ross has the report (and the accidental soaking of his cameraman).

http://www.myfoxdc.com/video/videoplayer.swf?dppversion=8705

It certainly appears to be the sort of thing that’ll keep a guy in shape. “You know what that’s like?” Alexander tells the Fox cameras, still sweating from being run through firefighter basic training in full gear. “It’s like a two minute drill in the fourth quarter and the offense is coming out [with] like a Peyton Manning, just running it, running it, running it.”

There’s a couple of notable differenecs, of course. “You’re trying to save somebody’s life,” Alexander says. “Got eighty pounds of gear on you. Gotta crawl, gotta climb, gotta save your own life at times.”

It’s amazing to see how firefighters train, and to understand just how grueling their work is. But for Alexander, the practical aspect of this experience is probably what he says after struggling to control the firehose: “That’s a workout right there.” Read more »
