Billy Kilmer Weighs In On John Beck

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2011 – 5:06 pm

To properly wrap up this week of non-stop John Beck conversation, I was fortunate enough to get a few minutes with Billy Kilmer at today’s Mickey Steele Memorial Golf Outing. Kilmer, of course, was half of one of the greatest quarterback controversies of all time, the bumper sticker-inspiring Sonny/Billy debate. To make things even better, Kilmer is a South Florida resident, and was familiar with Beck from his rookie season with the Dolphins — and, despite Beck’s well-chronicled struggles there, Kilmer came away with a favorable impression.

“He had a lot of natural talent, I thought,” Kilmer said. “I know when [Beck] was drafted, Sonny Jurgensen thought he had a lot of potential. I think Mike Shanahan will bring that out in him. But you gotta have competition at that position.”

Which, Kilmer claims, is a very good thing. “You’re gonna have to have good competition at that position, and that’s what makes a good quarterback.”

Which is not to say that Kilmer is totally onboard with Beck’s radio tour from this week:

About These Redskins 365 Hats

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2011 – 1:31 pm

This picture of Bruce Allen is actually from the LAST golf tournament I covered, Brian Orakpo‘s leukemia benefit in Virginia, but it’s relevant because it’s the first time I had seen one of those Redskins-colored 365 hats. I didn’t ask about it at the time, because … well, it was just one hat. But when former Head Hog George Starke AND his wife Petra both showed up wearing variants on the hat at TODAY’S Mickey Steele Golf Outing, I figured that there they were more than just a fashion statement.

“When someone does something special, we hand it out,” Allen told me. “It started at the end of the season, and we give it to coaches and different people, to say that Redskins football is everyday.”

And it doesn’t necessarily have to be something football-related — Allen said that he issued the hats to George because, “he married Petra.”

Starke associated the hats with a different event of note: Read more »

Markus White Gives Credit Where It’s Due

Posted by Brian Tinsman on May 20, 2011 – 12:50 pm

While I’m at the Mickey Steele Memorial Golf Outing, here’s Redskins.com intern Brian Tinsman with a look at yet another member of the Redskins’ 2011 Draft Class.

by Brian Tinsman

In a crowded draft class–let’s call them the “Draft Day Dozen”–it’s easy to forget some of the late-round picks. Realistically speaking, most of those guys won’t make the team, some will end up on the practice squad, and others will be looking for a new job next fall.

But if there’s a guy to really pull for in the late rounds, it’s seventh-round pick Markus White, outside linebacker from Florida State. Read more »

Mark Rypien, Joe Theismann, and Mike Shanahan Golfing: A Photo

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2011 – 8:33 am

No Hail! comic strip today, as writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli is on his honeymoon. Meanwhile, I’m over in Queenstown, Maryland, for the Mickey Steele Golf Outing, which benefits the Rypien Foundation and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation. I’ll have more from the event later on — and you can follow me on Twitter for some real-time updates — but for now, enjoy this thematically appropriate picture from last year’s American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, featuring (from left to right not counting the caddies in yellow) Rypien, Joe Theismann, and Mike Shanahan.

I wrote a little bit about that event here, and there’s another picture after the jump. Read more »
