Rex Grossman Joins The QB Derby, And Other Links

Posted by Matt Terl on May 18, 2011 – 4:59 pm

Well, the ongoing radio-based offseason Redskins quarterback controversy continues: first with John Beck returning to the airwaves yesterday, bringing along special guest Leonard Hankerson to an appearance on 106.7 The Fan. (Dan Steinberg has the details here, but — Hankerson aside — it’s pretty similar in tone to Beck’s Sirius appearance.)

Then Rex Grossman — who is not actually on the Redskins roster at the moment — came on ESPN980 with Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro, and made it clear that he still considers himself very much in play. Here’s the relevant quote, via John Keim at the Washington Examiner:

“I definitely feel I’m the starter, but I’m not even signed yet. The coaches have to set the playing field and let us know what the situation is. I feel I’m coming into the prime of my experience and I know what I can do well and what my weaknesses and strengths are and how it relates to this offense. I’ve been in crucial situations. I’ve been in the Super Bowl. I feel I’m so much better than I was then that I’d love to have the opportunity to have a full season with this offense and have a whole season to feel like this is my team. That’s what I want to happen.”

They say nothing gets Washingtonians going like a good QB controversy; maybe that’s what we have going here. (Beat writer Rich Campbell — who has moved to the revamped Washington Times from the Free Lance-Star — has a good take on the situation here.)

Back On The Beckwagon: Greg Cosell Weighs In

Posted by Matt Terl on May 18, 2011 – 12:16 pm

At this point, I’m just going to see how many John Beck items I can possibly write before he actually takes another snap on an NFL field. At the rate that the discussion’s progressing, I’m confident we can hit triple digits. The latest to weigh in? Greg Cosell, a senior producer at NFL Films who’s legendary for the amount of film study he does. He’s also one of the main guys responsible for ESPN’s NFL Matchup show, and, yes, he’s related to Howard Cosell.

Cosell took to Twitter today to weigh in on the ongoing “Can John Beck legitimately be considered a starting QB in this league?” debate, and came down … well, mostly on the side of yes. Certainly found a large number of nice things to say, anyhow.

Not Everyone’s Onboard With John Beck: A Becklash Roundup

Posted by Matt Terl on May 18, 2011 – 9:32 am

John Beck is very optimistic about his chances as starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins, and thus far I’ve been focusing on the positives in writing about that possibility. After all, Beck knows Beck far better than I do, so who am I to doubt his assertions? Many of his arguments do make sense, after all: he DID make rookie mistakes as a rookie, he HAS been in this offense for a year, he WAS highly regarded coming out of college, and so far this offseason he DOES seem to be taking an active leadership role.

But, as you’d expect, not everyone’s convinced. Not even close. So here, in the interests of fairness, is my first Becklash Roundup, collecting some of the more skeptical responses to the John Beck situation.

And, since Homer McFanboy‘s Brian Murphy has probably shot as many action pictures of Beck in a Redskins uniform as anyone (that’s one of his above), let’s start with his work from today: Read more »
