Draft Coverage: The Phone Call Story

Posted by Matt Terl on May 2, 2011 – 3:15 pm

The phone call anecdote is a staple of post-draft coverage, and why wouldn’t it be? It grounds a newly drafted player in something concrete and relatable, and there are so many potential variations: who called you? Where were you when you got the call? What’d they say? And so on.

Chris Cooley‘s draft day phone call story (pictured to the right) is legendary, as brother Tanner forgets that he left Joe Gibbs on hold … but most of them are a little more forgettable, just throwaways in the overarching So-And-So Got Drafted narrative.

The Redskins Draft Class In Nine-Minute Video Form

Posted by Matt Terl on May 2, 2011 – 9:01 am

There’s much bigger news out there today, obviously, and this post has nothing to do with that. (Although if you want a Redskins tie-in to bin Laden’s death, Dan Steinberg has aggregated the reaction tweets of D.C. athletes.)

No, this is just a fantastic video compilation of highlights of the Redskins’ twelve-man draft class — plus their Twitter reactions to being selected, and more — set to “Welcome To D.C.” by Mambo Sauce and “Moment 4 Life” by Nicki Minaj. And it is awesome. (Language warning: There’s a little bit of profanity in the soundtrack, so turn the volume down if you find that sort of thing offensive or you’re at work or whatever.)
