Brian Billick Has Some Different Opinions On The Redskins Draft Needs

There’s not a lot of uniformity in the projections of what the Redskins will do with the tenth overall pick in the 2011 Draft. Heck, I alone have projected no fewer than three different people in that spot in the last week. But some positions are definitely mentioned more than others.

The useful (if overwhelming) 2011 Mock Draft Database at DC Pro Sports Report currently covers 304 mock drafts; about 46% of them have the Redskins selecting a wide receiver. Roughly 25% (75 of them) suggest one of the quarterbacks — Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Mallet, Cam Newtown, Jake Locker, and even Colin Kaepernick are all mentioned. Another 17% suggest defensive end or linebacker.

Of the remaining 22% consist mostly of defensive tackles and the occasional quarterback. (A lot of the mocks seem to believe that Prince Amukamara is going to fall to ten, which I don’t.) A total of seven of the listed mock drafts have the team going with an offensive tackle.

FOX Sports.com NFL analyst Brian Billick is reading from a different script than all those people, though.
If you watch the video above, Billick seems pretty sure the defensive line is a-okay, and the team should draft along the offensive line.

“Sitting there with the tenth pick overall,” Billick intones, “It will be interesting to see what they do at the quarterback position. Do they covet a Cam Newton, If he’s indeed sitting there with the tenth pick? They could get help along the offensive line — maybe take the first offensive tackle off the board — [Anthony] Costanzo from Boston College would come to mind. Defensively, again, a solid front seven group; they probably need an additional edge pass rusher opposite Brian Orakpo and could always use help in the secondary.”

A few things jump out at me:

  • I believe this is the first time the 2010 Redskins’ front seven has been called “solid”.
  • As I mentioned, seven of those 304 mock drafts suggest an offensive tackle. Zero of those seven suggest Costanzo as that offensive tackle.
  • Also, not many people seem to think Costanzo will be the first tackle off the board at all.
  • Although cornerback might be a need, it’s hard to say the whole secondary needs work — the signing of O.J. Atogwe went a long way toward addressing that.

Look, I understand the compulsion to stake out your own territory when you’re predicting team needs. Everyone wants to make an outside-the-box prediction that turns out to be accurate. But it feels almost like Billick is talking about last year’s draft.

I guess the summary of this is that I may have officially reached my saturation point with pre-draft coverage. April 28 can’t get here soon enough.
