Hard on the heels of yesterday’s release of Clinton Portis comes the news of two more departing fan favorites: today, the team let go of linebacker Andre Carter and offensive lineman Derrick Dockery.
As with Portis, neither release comes as much of surprise: Dockery lost his starting job to Kory Lichtensteiger this year and ultimately found himself inactive on gamedays; by the end of the year he was openly wondering if he’d be brought back in 2011. And Carter never seemed to get fully comfortable in the team’s new 3-4 alignment; as he packed up his locker, he too was blunt in expressing his doubts about spending another season in D.C.
Carter and Dockery were both stand-up guys, not only on the field but in the community as well, but these moves bring the team a bit more in line with what Mike Shanahan is trying to build, both offensively and defensively.
Or maybe the equipment room is just running out of the number 6 — cutting Dockery (66), Carter (99, which is just 66 upside down), and Portis (26) certainly brings the 6 budget back down to Earth.
