One last anecdote from yesterday’s Diet Coke charity Capture The Flag event.
In addition to Chris Cooley and Lorenzo Alexander, one of the guests at the event was Alana Beard of the Washington Mystics. In the run-up to the event, the two Redskins and the Mystic were shooting around on the basketball/capture the flag court and eventually found themselves in a game of PIG — like HORSE, but shorter. Beard is an undeniably talented basketball player — she was the first Duke women’s basketball player to have her jersey retired, she was the second overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft, and she’s a four-time WNBA All-Star — and she eventually won the game, first knocking out Alexander and then outdueling Cooley.
Which, Alexander figured, made sense. “The person who won shoulda won,” he said. “She’s a professional basketball player, so I can’t be mad at that.”
And Beard was gracious in victory. “I was impressed by Cooley’s shot,” she said, “because normally a lot of football players like to think they can play basketball. I have friends that play football and think that they can beat me at any point in time because they’re athletic, and sometimes it’s not the case. But he’s got a pretty good shot. Lorenzo’s got a pretty good shot too.”
That left Cooley, whose reaction to being beaten was a bit more contentious. Beard’s winning shot — a behind-the-backboard shot from her natural lefty shooting position — was one that she missed, then re-took on the next turn. And that is apparently against Cooley’s Official Rules Of PIG. “You can’t shoot the same shot twice in a row,” Cooley said. “If you shoot and miss, you gotta move to a new spot. Because obviously you could just perfect a shot.”
Cooley returned to this theme while I was interviewing Beard, shouting over, “Ask her if she thinks she can beat me 1-on-1.”
