Redskins Cheerleaders On The News, And Other Links

Posted by Matt Terl on February 28, 2011 – 12:48 pm

In case you had forgotten that Redskins Cheeleader Auditions are coming up (and that prep classes are already underway), Fox 5 would like to remind you of that fact by having several cheerleaders in studio for an interview. And a performance, too, if that sort of thing appeals to you on a rainy Monday.

Charles Mann’s Hands

Posted by Matt Terl on February 28, 2011 – 11:32 am

I shook Charles Mann’s hand when he was in the building on Thursday, talking to students about preparation and planning. It was an unexpectedly painful experience.

The pain was unexpected not because Mann doesn’t look strong (he does), but because there’s been so much talk over the years about Dexter Manley’s handshake and no one ever mentions Mann’s. “It’s a standoff,” Mann says, when I ask him how his grip matched up to his old defensive linemate’s. “He tries to hurt people. I’m just really firm, because for years these things” — he holds out his huge hands and twisted fingers — “hurt so bad, and now they don’t hurt anymore. So this is like payback.”

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 5:39 pm

Here’s part 2 of Larry Michael’s interview with Mike Shanahan — and this part launches right in to the discussions about Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb before proceeding to talk about the team’s depth, the training camp location, and more. (Links go to the relevant transcriptions.) Enjoy! (And here’s part 1 if you missed it.)

Crowdsourcing Mike Shanahan’s Indianapolis Presser

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 5:20 pm

After a full day of transcribing Larry Michael’s interview with Mike Shanahan, there are few things on Earth I feel like doing LESS than I feel like transcribing Mike Shanahan’s press conference in Indianapolis. Which is fortunate, because I’m not in Indianapolis to see the presser, and I don’t yet have audio or video of it to transcribe. The good news — for me AND for those of you who are interested in the gist of what Shanahan said — is, of course,Twitter, which allows us to get instant feedback from the people who ARE there. Like this picture, for example, from Official Combine Correspondent Jordan Beane:

Or these summaries and quotes from the intrepid travelling Redskins Beat Corps (and Their Backing Band Of NFL Writers): Read more »

Updates From Indianapolis, Day 2 [Updated 4:50]

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 4:50 pm

intrepid correspondent Jordan Beane will be texting me brief updates from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianpolis. I’ll be updating this post with those updates and adjusting the updated time in the title. Expect mostly behind-the-scenes and slice-of-life updates; I don’t think you’ll be seeing analysis of Cam Newton’s throwing motion here. Check out the Day 1 updates here to get the backstory on why he’s so fixated on Rex Ryan, among other things.

Unless otherwise noted, these timestamped updates are Beane’s.

[4:50]

[4:10]No Cam Newton presser today. I’m sure all those who have waited all day for that are super pumped about that news.

* * * * * * * *

[4:04] Would love to know how often I’ve accidentally photobombed the NFL Network in the past 24 hours.

* * * * * * * *

[3:20] Mark Ingram on the podium now. People here considering him the appetizer for Cam Newton right after. He looks short — reminds me of Jerome Bettis from the hips up.

* * * * * * * *

[2:49] Best part of the Combine is that all the media travels all this way to sit right outside of the Combine. They would actually be able to watch it if they stayed home on their couch. Read more »

Mike Shanahan On Clinton Portis' Future

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 3:38 pm

One last post from Larry Michael’s wide-ranging interview with Mike Shanahan (and this one comes from part 1 of the interview, so you can watch it for yourself at the 9:25 mark here).

Michael goes through the guys who have notable questions surrounding them coming out of the season (hence the previous posts on McNabb and Haynesworth), and one of those is running back Clinton Portis, a veteran who’s coming off two injured seasons and carrying a big salary number for next year.

And Shanahan’s answer certainly seems … revealing. Read more »

Mike Shanahan Describes An Early Conversation With Albert Haynesworth

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 2:11 pm

Shortly after Albert Haynesworth was suspended for conduct detrimental to the club, this is how Mike Shanahan described one of his earliest meetings with the defensive lineman as head coach in Washington: “When he first came in, we talked about a 4-3 defense; he didn’t like the 4-3 defense a year ago. Didn’t like the base defense, didn’t like the nickel defense. Came here, didn’t wanna play nose tackle, didn’t wanna play defensive end.”

You might think that summary really captures the sheer, kafkaesque frustration the coach felt when dealing with Haynesworth, but the detailed version — as told to Larry Michael in their interview at the Combine yesterday — really expands on and enhances that feeling.

The subject came up when Michael asked what Haynesworth’s current status was, and if there was any chance he would be on the team this season. (“I get this question on Redskins Nation all the time,” Michael said, by way of segueing into the topic, “and it’s about Albert Haynesworth. And the question has been blunt at times: why is he still on the team?”)

Here’s the coach’s answer: Read more »

I’ve posted a couple of excerpts from this already, but here’s the first part of Larry Michael’s exclusive interview with head coach Mike Shanahan at the NFL Combine — in video form. Shanahan discusses what he looks for at the NFL Combine, how the uncertainty of this offseason affects his process, what he looks for in a rookie quarterback, and much more.

Combine Correspondent: An Encounter With A Fullback Prospect

Posted by Matt Terl on February 25, 2011 – 1:08 pm

Official Redskins Blog NFL Combine correspondent Jordan Beane checks in. This update is especially timely, as it centers on a chance encounter with a fullback prospect — while, over on Redskins.com, Gary Fitzgerald is doing a roster review of fullbacks. That’s some good synergy right there, kids! Enough from me — here’s Beane.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In case I haven’t made it abundantly clear, there are a lot of NFL people currently residing in a six block radius of Indianapolis. I’ve only been in town for seven hours and have already run into Kevin Gilbride, Rex Ryan (repeatedly) and scores of lower level NFL types, all with their team logo proudly emblazoned on some article of their clothing. As for the people that they’re all in town to see, the 2011 Combine participants, they’re nowhere to be found. Whether they’re undergoing a battery of tests, studying at the last minute for the Wonderlic test (someone even put together a book to help out prospective draft picks, like they’re taking the SAT’s) or sequestered away in some underground bunker, I’ve yet to see a real NFL draft prospect walking around the streets of Indianapolis. Well, that’s mostly true.
