Brothers Of The Legacy, Part 4

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2011 – 3:50 pm

Vince Lombardi’s tenure with the Redskins was too short by any measure, but especially so if you ask Sonny Jurgensen. He says as much in this installment of Brothers Of The Legacy, he says it when asked about the Broadway show Lombardi … it’s something Jurgensen clearly feels. Lombardi, he always says, made the game simple for him — and the statistics show it. Under Lombardi, Jurgensen had one of his best seasons as a pro, completing 62 percent of his passes for 3,102 yards in just 14 games — the last time in his career that he would break the 3,000 yard plateau.

And that’s what this fourth installment of the documentary covers: not just Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff, but the coach who reignited both their careers: Vince Lombardi. (On a less somber, meaningful note, you get to see Jurgensen doing drills while wearing an old-school Curly W Washington Senators cap — there’s a screencapture after the jump.)

The Other Senior Bowl Quarterbacks

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2011 – 2:30 pm

I compiled some of the views of quarterback prospect Jake Locker yesterday, but he’s far from the only quarterback drawing attention at the Senior Bowl. You can find detailed reviews on Iowa’s RIcky Stanzi, Florida State’s Christian Ponder, Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick, Andy Dalton of TCU, and more all over the place — and it can make for interesting, if overwhelming, reading — but for me, two articles that I read today seemed to come together well to help broaden my focus.

Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach Is A Very Optimistic Redskins Fan, And Other Links

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2011 – 11:19 am

Darrell Armstrong is a former journeyman NBA player, currently serving as the player development coach for the Dallas Mavericks. He was a player on the Mavericks when he first came to the attention of Redskins fans. In 2005, after the Redskins beat the Cowboys 35-7 behind three touchdowns from Mark Brunell to Chris Cooley, Armstrong grabbed the microphone during a pregame ceremony and yelled “How bout those Redskins!”

The taunting earned Armstrong a $1,000 fine, which merited an AP story, which in turn explained:

As part of the pregame ceremonies, guard Devin Harris wished the crowd a happy holiday. Then Armstrong, who wasn’t scheduled to speak, asked for the microphone. He added his holiday wishes, then made his fine-inducing proclamation, a twist on a famous line by former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson.A mixture of laughter and boos followed, even from German import Dirk Nowitzki. [Owner Mark] Cuban laughed, too, and joked with Armstrong about it when he returned to the bench.

Five years hasn’t dulled Armstrong’s fandom any. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Full-Court Press blog, Armstrong — raised a Redskins fan in North Carolina — is picking the Redskins to win the Super Bowl a week from Sunday, despite the fact that they haven’t actually played a football game for weeks.

The Star-Telegram’s Dwain Price explains:

[W]hen Armstrong was asked Wednesday who will win next week’s Super Bowl between Pittsburgh and Green Bay, he didn’t hesitate to say: “The Redskins.”The Redskins will be playing the intrasquad Super Bowl team in a scrimmage. And the Redskins are going to win, 24-21.”

So I think we can make it official: the most optimistic Redskins fan in the world works for a pro sports team in Dallas — and more power to him.
