Redskins Sign Practice Squad Guys To Reserve/Futures Contracts
Posted by on January 4, 2011 – 4:40 pm
The Redskins announced today the signing of six of their practice squad players to Reserve/Futures contracts. These are players who weren’t on an active roster at the end of the season that the team wants to have under contract to bring in to training camp.
Here are the six guys; since all of them were previously with the Redskins’ practice squad (which isn’t always the case with these kinds of signings), I’ve added a brief reminder of what you might’ve heard about them:
- Selvish Capers, OL, the Redskins’ seventh-round draft choice in 2010, converted tight end out of West Virginia, currently wearing Chris Samuels’ old number. Also, pictured above.
- Rashaad Duncan, DT, an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh in 2009, and a relatively late addition to the Redskins practice squad.
- Xavier Fulton, OL, fifth-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2009, a big guy who has done voiceover work in the past
- Taurus Johnson, WR. a bigger receiver than most of the guys who saw the field for Washington in 2010, has been on the practice squad since early November.
- Shawnbrey McNeal, RB, went from The U to SMU where he became the first 1,000 yard rusher for coach June Jones, signed the same day as…
- Maurice Price, WR, has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted in 2007. Like McNeal, sees some inspiration in Redskins WR Anthony Armstrong.
And seeing inspiration in Armstrong isn’t exactly a bad thing. When the Redskins announced their 2010 Reserve/Futures guys just under a year ago, Anthony Armstrong was one of the names on the list. Darrel Young was another. If there’s one thing this coaching staff has demonstrated, it’s a willingness to cultivate talent and promote guys they believe can help. So become aware of these folks now and save yourself some trouble come training camp.

Clinton Portis Explains How He Sees The Media Coverage
Posted by on January 4, 2011 – 12:09 pm
Clinton Portis has talked a lot in recent years about “haters” and “doubters” and people in the media who are against him — here’s a perfectly sound example — but to the best of my recollection he’s never given a calm, reflective explanation of what he perceived as “hating” and what he didn’t.
But “reflective” would be a good word to describe Portis’ radio appearance today on the Mike Wise Show With Holden Kushner, as would “elegiac” and “nostalgic”. The hosts focused many of their questions on the possibility that Portis’ time in D.C. has come to an end — although that’s far from certain at this point — and that sentiment infused just about everything Portis said.
So when Wise challenged Portis’ claim that he had “never seen a feel-good story about anyone in this organization,” Portis explained what he meant. Read more »

And Here Are The Redskins 2011 Opponents
Posted by on January 4, 2011 – 9:50 am
As we continue the slightly depressing task of looking forward to the 2011 season while a bunch of other teams make playoff preparations, we can now look at the list of opponents. It’s a fairly pointless task, of course — we’re not even certain who the head coaches will be for some of these teams, let alone who the players will be — but here’s the relevant info for those of you who are given to wild speculation, with 2010 playoff teams in bold.

The AP Photo of Santana Moss and the Seattle skyline is not from the Redskins last trip to play the Seahawks; it’s from the last playoff game the Redskins played in, the final game of Joe Gibbs’ second stint here, and the end of the magical Todd Collins-led, emotion-fueled 2007 run. I’m using it mainly because it’s an iconic Redskins-in-Seattle shot, but also because that game happened three years ago tomorrow. Seems much, much longer ago. Read more »
