An Additional Gift At The Redskins Santa Shoppe

Today was the Redskins’ annual toy distribution. The locker room at FedExField was transformed into a Santa’s workshop, and Redskins players joined with US Marines to hand out toys to 1,100 kids in need from the D.C. area through the Touchdowns For Tots program. (That’s the new name for the football arm of the reliable Toys For Tots program.) http://www.toysfortots.org/

This has been an excellent event every time I’ve attended — the kids are thrilled to receive the toys, to see the players, and often just to be in the Redskins locker room. (Frequently, their teachers are even more excited about all of those things, and today was no exception: a woman with graying hair and a Marcus Washington jersey greeted Ryan Torain with an effusive “Thank you, thank you, THANK you for coming along and saving our running game.”)

And today’s event had an added wrinkle, a story that sounded far more like it came from Hollywood than from its actual place of origin, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Read more »
