Redskins Explain How To Discuss Your Teammate's Ongoing Drama

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2010 – 2:50 pm

One of the interesting subplots of the Albert Haynesworth saga was watching how different players addressed the topic with the media.

The players are put into an awkward position when it comes to something like this: if they don’t talk, the media gets annoyed with them. If they talk but offer nothing but platitudes, everyone rolls their eyes and keeps asking the same questions until they say something interesting. And when they say something interesting, they risk angering their teammates, their coaches, and even the fans. And that’s just when they’re quoted accurately.

Washington Redskins Courage House At Youth For Tomorrow

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2010 – 11:46 am

Yesterday marked the dedication of the Washington Redskins Courage House at the Bristow, Virginia, campus of Joe Gibbs’ Youth For Tomorrow.

The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation has expanded its mission; they’ve always been dedicated to helping kids who were victims of neglect and abuse, but they now hope to have a dedicated facility in every NFL market. They’re calling these spots Courage Houses, and according to past foundation president John Lopez, “Today the foundation’s goal is to establish a house in every NFL city. We’re at 20 right now.”

The 21st is the Redskins house. Like many others in the network, it’s part of an existing facility, in this case Joe Gibbs’ Youth For Tomorrow, another organization that helps homeless and at-risk kids. The speakers at yesterday’s dedication included a former YFT resident named Michael, who gave a truly harrowing account of his past; former Ed Block Courage Award winner Joe Jacoby; and Snyder and Gibbs themselves.

Michael’s speech was without question the most affecting, but Gibbs did offer (among many other things) at least one entertaining anecdote about Snyder, and he also offered — as everyone eventually must — his thoughts on the Albert Haynesworth drama. Those are both after the jump. Read more »

Hail! Bids Farewell To The Haynesworth Drama

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2010 – 9:18 am

As everyone writes their eulogies to the Albert Haynesworth drama, as the players answer questions about being past the distraction, I can’t shake the feeling that we’re living in the last reel of an old-school horror movie. I’m terrified that the Haynesworth drama is unkillable and that we’re just at the part where its eyes suddenly open, violins start shrieking on the soundtrack, and we’ve got another pointless ten-minute chase scene to get through before the credits actually roll.

But Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli doesn’t share my fears, and uses this week’s strip to say goodbye to that neverending story in his own unique way. As always, click the first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.
