Mike Shanahan Will Discuss Albert Haynesworth On Wednesday. Really.

Posted by Matt Terl on December 6, 2010 – 3:32 pm

There was some interesting actual news that came out of head coach Mike Shanahan’s Monday press conference. LaRon Landry actually will test out his injured Achilles this week, for one thing. Ryan Torain is cleared to practice without restriction, for another. And Trent Williams should be good to go for Sunday’s game.

But before we got to any of that, there was a whole raft of questions about Albert Haynesworth. And on that subject, there was only one bit of concrete news.

“Before I address any questions about Albert,” Shanahan said, “I wanna sit down and talk to Albert myself over the next couple of days. I had a chance to talk with our team today as I normally do on a Monday, but before I go into any detail about Albert, I’ll sit down and talk to Albert and address it with you [media types] on Wednesday.”

With that clearly stated and out of the way, Shanhan promptly fielded five more questions about Haynesworth. Read more »

LaRon Landry Is Surprised By The Idea That His Season Might Be Over

Posted by Matt Terl on December 6, 2010 – 1:16 pm

LaRon Landry started the season off strong, being mentioned seriously as the team’s defensive player of the year and slightly more fancifully as the NFL Defensive Player Of The Year. But he’s missed three straight games with an Achilles injury, has been seen walking around Redskins Park in a protective boot, and the sentiment had been growing among the media that it might make more sense to just go ahead and put Landry on Injured Reserve for the year, ending his season and allowing him to heal.

In fact, that sentiment had grown strong enough to lead to sentences like this one: “Shanahan said Landry is not yet a candidate to be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.” That happens to be from a Ryan O’Halloran piece on CSNWashington.com, but he wasn’t the only one thinking along those lines — it seemed like nearly everyone expressed some version of the thought at some point.

Apparently no one told Landry that, though. Read more »

Brian Orakpo And London Fletcher Sum It Up

Posted by Matt Terl on December 6, 2010 – 10:33 am

There are a lot of Redskins players quoted in the Comcast SportsNet segment above, but I think Brian Orakpo does the best job of summing up the way a whole lot of people feel after yesterday’s demoralizing beatdown at the Meadowlands.

“It’s very frustrating,” Orakpo said. “You want to do well. You want to perform. You know what’s at stake. Our back’s against the wall. I’m tired of it, I know a lot of people are tired of it, I know you guys are tired of it, covering a terrible team like this. We’ve got to get things better.”

Sure, Orakpo went on to some more optimistic stuff — “We know we can be a great team. We know we can be a good team. We’ve just got to be consistent and don’t get behind like this. It’s hard to come back like that. — but that’s a lot harder to see right now than the frustration.

But the top quote — the soundbite from the CSN piece — wasn’t Orakpo’s only accurate description of the frustration. “It’s frustrating because, like I said, we’ve got good players, we’ve got good coaches, we’ve got good guys on this team that work hard,” he said earlier, “and for us to keep going out week in and week out and keep getting our [butts] whooped like that, it’s just not a good thing.”

And Orakpo wasn’t the only linebacker expressing frustration. Here’s London Fletcher: Read more »
