Clinton Portis Has Surgery, Wants To Come Back, And Talks About Fans

Posted by Matt Terl on December 2, 2010 – 4:09 pm

Clinton Portis talked to the media today, confirming that he got surgery on his injured abdomen, and that the doctors also surgically repaired his groin as well — you know, while they were in the neighborhood. “I went and got tuned up,” Portis said. “I feel like everything should be fine.”

And Portis was very clear in his desire to return to the Redskins next year as well. “I’m looking forward to coming back next year,” Portis said. “I would love to come back here. I think they got a good thing going. The coaching staff and the organization headed in the right direction.”

As the guy heading up that coaching staff, Mike Shanahan also seemed interested in having Portis return next year, although he was somewhat cautious and measured in his predictions.”I’m hoping that he can come back here,” Shanahan said. “He’s gotta make that commitment that we talked about. Hopefully he can be a lot healthier than he’s been over the last couple years, so there’s bunch of factors, but I think I’ve shared with you how I feel about Clinton. Has age caught up with him? Have the injuries caught up with him? Only time will tell.”

Portis also made a slightly delayed version of his regular appearance on the Mike Wise Show on 106.7 The Fan today, and he offered his opinion on the question of FedExField’s homefield advantage and Carlos Rogers’ thoughts on the fans.

Ma'ake Kemoeatu Wins Redskins Ed Block Courage Award

Posted by Matt Terl on December 2, 2010 – 12:02 pm

Redskins nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu was named the recipient of the team’s 2010 Ed Block Courage Award. A player on each NFL is given this award, which rewards extraordinary courage in the face of adversity. Kemoeatu has rehabilitated a torn Achilles tendon prior to the 2009 season, and didn’t return to practice until this past offseason.

“I missed a whole year of football,” Kemoeatu said. “I tore my Achilles in training camp 2009, had to get it repaired, had surgery, and after the surgery the skin got infected so I had to have another surgery to get a skin graft. And when I first got here, Larry Hess and the trainers got on me quick, and from April all the way ’til training camp we’ve been working on it and rehabbing and making a comeback. It wasn’t normal until probably, maybe the end of preseason I started feeling like I could walk normal again.”

It was an injury that Keamoeatu briefly thought could end his football career. “It did cross my mind,” Kemoeatu said. “I was like, ‘Football could be over for me.’ And being that it was eight years, it could be over. Football’s not forever; it could be over any time.”

Keamoatu was grateful to his teammates for the honor. “That just shows me that they have my back through thick and thin,” he said.

And then, when Kemoeatu was done speaking to the media, Mike Sellers demonstrated for the cameras once again just how big Kemoeatu’s helmet is, this time even using Comcast SportsNet’s Chick Hernandez as a prop:
