An Imaginary Story About The FedExField Pressbox Hot Dogs

Posted by Matt Terl on November 19, 2010 – 3:35 pm

The Washington City Paper received the photo above from an unnamed “member of the media covering” the Redskins/Eagles game Monday night.

According to the City Paper, it’s a “photo of the pre-game ‘meal’ provided for working press,” and is notable because, “most teams serve something that more closely resembles food, since the reporters, producers, photographers, and other journalists at the game are only there doing their jobs.”

The anonymous member of the media in question allegedly went on to tell the City Paper, “There were buns off to the side, no napkins, warm water, and maybe one bottle of a condiment. Embarrassing.”

Embarrassing indeed, except for fact that none of it is true. That’s not a photo from the press box of food from Monday night’s game at FedExField.

This wasn’t exactly tough to figure out, and I’ve confirmed it several different ways.

More Fan-Created Redskins Uniforms

Posted by Matt Terl on November 19, 2010 – 3:00 pm

I don’t know why I do this. Every time I write about a fan-created Redskins uniform, everyone goes insane for three and a half weeks. But this was running around the internet today, so I’ll post it here with one caveat: THESE ARE NOT HAPPENING. They are not real.

They were debunked in a thread on ExtremeSkins last month; for some reason they resurfaced today — along with similarly imaginary designs for the other 31 NFL teams — and were promptly debunked again in no uncertain terms by NFL PR guy Brian McCarthy. THEY ARE NOT HAPPENING.

So, with that warning up top, here are two different fan renderings of hypothetical Redskins uniforms based on the Nike Pro Combat unis that college teams are wearing. Click to enlarge.

That one is via @ChadDukes. This next one is from here. Read more »

The Grinch At FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on November 19, 2010 – 1:49 pm

The Grinch was at FedExField on Monday night, and not just in the metaphorical, “Oh my gosh we lost by 31 and now Christmas is ruined FOREVER!” kind of way.

The Dr. Seuss character was wandering the parking lots and (seemingly) filching rolls from hapless tailgaters as a promotion for the ICE! Experience at the Gaylord National hotel in National Harbor, a 15,000 square foot rendition of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” carved entirely out of solid blocks of ice. (You can get your tickets here.)

I had a chance to see a preview of the event when I was at National Harbor for the Fit For You 5K last weekend, and I will tell you that — despite the slightly unwieldy name — it is frankly amazing. The photo galleries here don’t really do it justice, as it’s more about the overwhelming spectacle of it all than just the visuals in a photo, but they do give a sense of the thing.

It takes two million pounds of ice to make the exhibit, which is carved by a band of professional ice carvers from Harbin, China, home of a gigantic ice carving festival — this video explains it all in more detail: Read more »

Past Redskins Super Bowls In Cartoon Form

Posted by Matt Terl on November 19, 2010 – 10:25 am

Pro-Football-Reference.com has been an invaluable resource for a long time, but tweeting a link to this archive of Super Bowl Newspaper Cartoons and Game Preview Art might be the single best thing they’ve ever done.

It doesn’t purport to be a complete archive — webmaster Mark Bolding of Bolding Sports Research writes, “This collection is what I feel are the most artistic and insightful pieces from the respective years. Each cartoonist has caught the essence of the event in theme, beauty or sarcasm. It is what I consider the “Hall of Fame” of Super Bowl editorial cartoons.”

And it is awesome. These are just a few of the ones relating to the Redskins’ five Super Bowl appearances (click images to enlarge), but this is the kind of archive the really rewards an extended period of casual browsing. (I can’t imagine where anyone would find that kind of time on a Friday afternoon just before Thanksgiving.) Enjoy.

Hail! Tries A Unique Way Of Moving On

Posted by Matt Terl on November 19, 2010 – 9:30 am

Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli lives on the west coast, but he flew east for his birthday, and was able to attend Monday night’s Redskins game to celebrate. So, um, happy birthday, Ben! As a result of that experience, it’s understandable that this week’s comic strip would be focused on moving on from Monday night’s loss. The specific method that he’s chosen to depict here … well, I’m not sure how effective it would be, but I’m ready to try anything.

Like always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.
