Billy Ray Cyrus — father of Miley and auteur behind the 1992 #1 single “Achy Breaky Heart” — will be singing the National Anthem at Monday night’s game at FedExField, and he’ll also be performing at halftime. I have no particularly strong feeling for or against Cyrus, and I have only one goal with regards to his gameday appearance: I want to find Cyrus, Donovan McNabb, and some guy dressed as Santa Claus, and I want to recreate this 1996 photograph.
The picture comes from the Syracuse Post-Standard, and the caption does not imply a particularly close relationship between the QB and the singer:
“Donovan McNabb and SU offensive coordinator George DeLeone stand next to country western artist Billy Ray Cyrus who was visiting St. Jude Chidren’s hospital at the same time that McNabb and SU team members were visting the hospital during their week in Memphis TN. for the Liberty Bowl Game against Houston in 1996.”
If you want to extrapolate anything from this, it’s probably worth mentioning that Syracuse went on to win that Liberty Bowl 30-17 over Houston. McNabb completed just 4-for-10 passing for 76 yards, but he also rushed for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns. So you can add to your stat sheets that Donovan McNabb is currently winning 100 percent of his games that follow known encounters with Billy Ray Cyrus. For whatever that’s worth.
Anyhow, yeah, as they say, that happened.
