Redskins @ Lions – Third Quarter Reactions

Posted by Matt Terl on October 31, 2010 – 3:28 pm

Here’s how you score -10 points in an NFL football game — and, yes, that’s negative ten points:

First you hold the Lions to a field goal attempt deep in their own territory. Next, get called for encroachment, giving them a new set of downs and turning (a likely) three points into seven. That’s -4.

Next, have your explosive kickoff returner take the ball back 95 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff, but be sure to commit a penalty on the return. That negates the touchdown for an additional -6.

This sparked some debate on Twitter as to if the Redskins should be credited with -11, but I’m saying that the extra point never happened and therefore wasn’t taken off the board. Of course, the field goal was never attempted either, which would seem to undermine that logic, but attempting to think about this logically kind of defeats the point, which is this:

This game is going so poorly that I’m attempting to argue how many NEGATIVE points the Redskins scored in the third quarter. That’s … not very good.
