A Beat Detroit Shirt, And Other Links

Posted by Matt Terl on October 29, 2010 – 5:19 pm

The employees at Redskins Park are still wearing weekly shirts for each opponent. No word on if we’ll receive BEAT THE BYE shirts next Friday. But if you believe Fanhouse’s David Elfin, the Redskins need all the help they can get heading into Ford Field.

A grim excerpt:

The more troublesome history for the Redskins is how they have struggled against the lowly Lions in Detroit lately. After beating Detroit 18 straight times from 1968-97, Washington is just 4-3 since. Of course, the most egregious defeat came in Week 3 last year as the Lions ended a 19-game losing streak by beating the Redskins 19-14. But Zorn’s 2008 team needed a punt return touchdown by Santana Moss to get past the winless Lions 25-17. And Gibbs’ guys needed a touchdown by Walt Harris on a blocked punt to win 17-10 at Ford Field in 2004.

There’s even more of that kind of excitement in the article. I don’t know if a few black T-shirts can help with any of that, but they certainly can’t hurt.

After the jump, a few more links and things to read. Read more »

Sonny Jurgensen Sees 'Lombardi'

Posted by Matt Terl on October 29, 2010 – 2:57 pm

On Bruce Allen’s birthday, he went to see the new Broadway play LOMBARDI along with a group that included Daniel Snyder, Sam Huff, and Sonny Jurgensen. When I asked Allen about the evening, he said that he loved the show but recommended that I talk to Jurgensen if I wanted more details.

Which makes sense, I suppose. It’s not everyone on the planet who can say they saw a Broadway show about the guy they posed with for a Sports Illustrated cover — an observation that Jurgensen himself was quick to make. “It was very special for me to see a play where you actually knew the person,” Jurgensen told me today. “You knew him. You had played for him. That was very unusual — I don’t think very many people get have that experience.”

And that makes Jurgensen’s favorable review of the performances carry even more weight. “Dan Lauria was very good” as Lombardi, Jurgensen said. “Judith Light as Marie Lombardi was outstanding.”

Jurgensen has actually been at least tangentially involved with the production for awhile now. Read more »

A Few More Honors For DeAngelo Hall

Posted by Matt Terl on October 29, 2010 – 10:27 am

Talking to the media after his four-interception day last Sunday, DeAngelo Hall said, “I had my mom, my aunt, and my two cousins in the stands. The first ball went to my mom. Second ball went to my aunt. Next thing you know, everybody had a ball.”

It was a great line, all the better because it was completely true: Judy Porta, who describes herself as “a jealous Bears fan but happy for [Hall’s] mom,” snapped the picture above of Joan Hall after the game and was kind enough to share it with us. (Actually, all of the Bears fans I encountered were generous — much like their quarterback, but vastly more polite about it.)

Since then, Hall has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week, done eleven thousand interviews, and had his jersey shipped off to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio. And today, he got a couple more honors.

Happy Halloween From Hail!

Posted by Matt Terl on October 29, 2010 – 8:03 am

Not much of an introduction needed to this one, as Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli is just getting into the holiday spirit. (Although I should probably also mention that this Captain Chaos T-shirt is available for purchase right here. Other than that … enjoy, and hopefully this is the start of a happy Halloween weekend.

(As always, click the first panel or the Read More link for the rest of the strip.)
