Jim Haslett Praises Peyton Manning, LaRon Landry

Posted by Matt Terl on October 15, 2010 – 3:01 pm

After Trent Williams offered up his admiring analysis of Colts pass rusher Dwight Freeney yesterday, I’m sure you were sitting around saying, “Boy, I sure hope someone on the defensive side of the ball can be just as complimentary of Peyton Manning!” And if I’m right in assuming that, get ready to be happy, because here’s defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

“I think Peyton’s probably, if not the greatest quarterback of all time, he’s gotta be considered,” Haslett said today. “There’s not much he hasn’t seen and he hasn’t done. I’ll give you a little story:

A Tribute To Russ Grimm

Posted by Matt Terl on October 15, 2010 – 12:28 pm

As I’ve mentioned before, this Sunday’s game is the first annual Redskins Homecoming game. Redskins alumni will be honored before the game, they’ll be participating in an alumni parade around the stadium at 5:00, and recent Canton enshrinee Russ Grimm will receive his Hall Of Fame ring at halftime.

The parking lots open at 2:00 — and, yes, the videoboards showing RedZone channel will be back — but here’s an excellent Redskins Broadcast Net tribute to Grimm to get you into the spirit of the weekend.

Be sure to watch through to the end — Joe Gibbs’s tribute might be my favorite part. Read more »

Chris Cooley On The Today Show

Posted by Matt Terl on October 15, 2010 – 10:51 am

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell appeared on The Today Show today to discuss the NFL’s breast cancer initiative. But he was preceded by Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, sharing the story of his mother’s battle with breast cancer. It’s a story that most Redskins fans have already heard, but it’s terrific that Cooley can bring this sort of thing to a national audience, and it’s a great look at the All-Star Survivors Luncheon. LaRon Landry's Catchphrase Makes It To Hail!

Posted by Matt Terl on October 15, 2010 – 9:54 am

It’s big day for LaRon Landry’s 2010 catchphrase, “Meat and Potatoes.” A few weeks ago, it was just something Landry regularly mentioned, somewhat inscrutably, on Twitter. Then Dan Steinberg got to the roots of the saying on the DC Sports Bog. Today — two days after Landry was named NFC Defensive Player Of The Week and the day after his 26th birthday — it’s in the headline of an AP article about Landry’s resurgent season AND Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli has made it central to this week’s strip. I think it’s safe to say that “Meat and Potatoes” is officially mainstream now. Sorry, Redskins hipsters.

(One other anecdote worth excerpting from that AP story comes from Chris Wilson, detailing a drill Landry’s rookie year in which five players had to race to four cones. Here’s Wilson, via the AP’s Joseph White: “Whoever didn’t get a cone was the guy that had to run the extra lap and do some push-ups or whatever,” linebacker Chris Wilson said. “So LaRon is running, and it looks like he’s going to be the guy who’s not going to get a cone, and he just jacks up one of his own teammates, elbows another rookie right in the back, knocks him way past the cone and picks the cone up. I’m like, ‘This is crazy.'”

And that’s just another reason Landry’s become a fan favorite.)

As always, click this first panel or the Read More link for the rest of the strip.
