Donovan McNabb Explains His On-Field Demeanor

Posted by Matt Terl on October 12, 2010 – 12:37 pm

Donovan McNabb also avoided saying anything controversial on HIS weekly radio show, on ESPN980 alongside Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro of The Sports Fix, although McNabb in general is much less likely to generate drama than is Clinton Portis. The newsiest note from McNabb is that he is generally uninjured. “I’m fine,” he said. “Just a little tweak here and there, but I’m good.”

But among the non-controversial, non-newsy stuff, there were at least a couple of things that I found interesting, or at least somewhat informative about a guy who’s still fairly new to this team. Sheehan asked McNabb about the idea that his simple presence increased his teammates’ confidence, and further asked if there was anything McNabb did in the huddle to help project that.

Clinton Portis Says He's "Getting Better"

Posted by Matt Terl on October 12, 2010 – 11:27 am

Clinton Portis made his weekly radio appearance today on The Mike Wise Show With Holden Kushner on 106.7 The Fan, and he kindly avoided saying anything to spark national or even local controversy. (Not for lack of trying on Kushner’s part, but Portis laughed and avoided questions about Brett Favre’s recent off-field drama, saying, “Politically correct answer: I have no knowledge of this situation.” Thank goodness.)

The big news dealt with Portis’ recovery from his groin injury. “This is a tricky injury,” Portis said. “I never thought nine days later I’d still be sore. It still hurts to get up out of bed and roll over and hobble around. But I can tell I’m getting better.”

The “getting better” part is what Portis focused on, and he dismissed the suggestion that he might be done as a Redskin. Read more »

Get Ready For Redskins Homecoming This Sunday Night

Posted by Matt Terl on October 12, 2010 – 10:33 am

This weekend’s Sunday night game against the Indianapolis Colts will also be the team’s first annual Homecoming Game, part of this season’s initiative toward reconnecting with the team’s alumni and proud heritage as a whole. There’s a full day of festivities planned, and I’m sure more details will emerge as we get closer to Sunday, but here are a few of the high notes:

  • Parking lots will be opening early, at 2:00, and — like at the season opener — there will be videoboards set up in the parking lots showing the NFL RedZone channel during the early games.
  • The lower level of the stadium will be accessible via the Bud Light Pavilion at 5:00 p.m. and the RedZone channel will be shown on the new HD videoboards. Other entrances will open at 6:00 p.m.
  • Also at 5:00 p.m., the Redskins Alumni will join the marching band and cheerleaders for a homecoming parade around the stadium — and a bunch of Alumni are expected. The Alumni will also be introduced on the field prior to kickoff.
  • The highlight of the festivities will take place at halftime, when 2010 Hall of Fame enshrinee Russ Grimm will be presented with his Hall of Fame ring alongside legendary offensive line coach Joe Bugel and many of the storied Hogs.

Watching Grimm and Bugel interact is always fun; interviewing the two of them together in Canton this year was — for this longtime Redskins fan — one of the cooler things I’ve gotten to do in this job. Here is a reposted snippet of the interview, just to start getting you ready for Sunday night.

If this is anything like the season opener, it should be a pretty good day. Read more »
