Vonnie Holliday Explains How He Became Considered A Leader

Posted by Matt Terl on October 8, 2010 – 4:44 pm

Vonnie Holliday didn’t like being made inactive last week. “It was very frustrating,” he told Rich Campbell of the Free Lance-Star. “I tried to take it all in stride and still try to be helpful to my teammates. It was a different role-one I’m not used to and one I don’t want to get used to.”

And defensive coordinator Jim Haslett — who said the move was a team decision based on a lot of factors — understood where Holliday was coming from. “It’s a shame that — you know, Vonnie’s one of the leaders on the team — that he had to do that,” Haslett said today, adding, “But Vonnie’s playing this week and he’ll be ready to go.”

Which raised a question for me: how does someone who’s been in town for less than five months become a leader on a team? I’m not asking the question as a knock on Holliday, who seems — in my limited interactions with him — smart, charismatic, and generally like an all-around good guy. But he’s a thirteen year veteran on his fifth team, a situation that seems more likely to be awkward than like one where you walk in and become a leader.

So I figured maybe I should ask him.

Trent Williams Seems Likely To Play Sunday

Posted by Matt Terl on October 8, 2010 – 2:16 pm

Last week, rookie offensive tackle craftily refused to put a percentage on the likelihood that he’d return from his injury. He did not, obviously, make that return.

This week, though, it was a different story, as Williams all but said that he’d be back out there against the Packers. “I think last Friday I wanted to play, but it was still unclear,” Williams clarified today. “I didn’t know if I was. This Friday, I’m almost positive I’m gonna play.”

This Week's Shirt And Other Reading

Posted by Matt Terl on October 8, 2010 – 12:06 pm

It appears that the weekly shirts for Redskins Park staffers are now an official tradition. Here’s this week’s:

Other links and general Redskins miscellany for the day:

  • I’ve written a couple times about Brian Orakpo drawing holding penalties in place of sacks, but the Washington Post’s Rick Maese went a step (or eight) further and dug up some awesome numbers: “The NFL doesn’t track individual players who are held, so it’s not clear whether Orakpo leads the league,” Maese writes. “But according to FootballOutsiders.com’s research, the Redskins’ opponents have been penalized for a league-high 15 holding penalties through the first quarter of the NFL schedule.” Mister Irrelevant has summarized this article with the headline “Brian Orakpo Is A Motherflippin’ Monster,” so you know it’s worth reading.

Hail! To The One Man Gang

Posted by Matt Terl on October 8, 2010 – 9:28 am

Usually I try to write a couple of paragraphs of introduction to writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli‘s weekly Hail! comic strip, but I’m assuming that this week’s doesn’t really need any of that. If you have any questions as to why Lorenzo Alexander deserves all the attention he can get, allow me to suggest that you watch the videos in this post repeatedly. Thank you.

As ever, click this first panel or the Read More link for the rest of the strip.
