Charles Barkley Has His Burgundy McNabb Jersey And Supreme Confidence In The Redskins

Posted by Matt Terl on October 1, 2010 – 4:02 pm

Hey, remember back in July when basketball great Charles Barkley promised to wear a Donovan McNabb jersey to the Eagles/Redskins game in Philly? Yeah, well, guess what’s actually happening this weekend, based on Barkley’s comments to Howard Eskin and Ike Reese on WIP in Philly.

This popped up on Deadspin via Sports Radio Interviews today, but that streamlined transcript really loses some of the enthusiasm that both Barkley and Eskin bring to the exchange. My first recommendation is that you listen to the audio here, but — barring that — I’ve re-transcribed the initial stretch of the conversation to try to convey some of Barkley’s fire.

The hosts (it’s mostly Eskin) are in bold, but let’s start with Barkley:

“First of all, I can’t wait to get to the game Sunday,” Barkley begins, “and I wanna personally thank Mr. Daniel Snyder for sending me my Donovan McNabb Redskins jersey. And I cannot wait. Now, I’m a little disturbed because, you know, Michael Vick, I’m pulling for him. But I’ve always said that Donovan never has gotten the respect he deserves in Philadelphia and before Michael Vick got in the game I didn’t know that [he would be playing].

“But I’m wearing my Donovan McNabb jersey and I can’t wait till Sunday at 4:15 Eastern.”

You know how stupid and foolish you are to wear a Donovan McNabb Redskin jersey to an Eagles home game. You know how stupid and foolish you are, correct?

Sonny Jurgensen's First Game Against The Eagles

Posted by Matt Terl on October 1, 2010 – 1:05 pm

The similarities are somewhat startling; I’ve put them in bold to remove any hint of subtlety here:

The Redskins team was coming off a disheartening loss to St. Louis — a loss in which they fell behind early by a score of 14-3 — and found themselves preparing to face the Philadelphia Eagles. But it wasn’t just a crucial division game; the entire storyline of this game surrounded the Redskins’ star quarterback, acquired via offseason trade from those same Eagles.

So, yeah, we’ve sort of been here before, way back in October of 1964.

There are differences, obviously, because history doesn’t PRECISELY repeat itself: the St. Louis team was the Cardinals, not the Rams; the Eagles game was at home Week 5, not on the road during Week 4; and the quarterback was Sonny Jurgensen, not Donovan McNabb.

Even the storyline was slightly different, as the Eagles had received quarterback Norm Snead from the Redskins in exchange for Jurgensen, and he played in the game. The 2010 Redskins gave up picks, not players, so you can’t quite play up the same level of interpersonal drama.

But the underlying theme was the same: how would Jurgensen respond facing off against the legendarily hostile — yes, that was their reputation even then — Eagles fans?

He responded pretty well, thanks. Here’s the lede of the Washington Post’s game story from the next day: Read more »

More About The Redskins Wives Charity Basketball Game

Posted by Matt Terl on October 1, 2010 – 11:12 am

I wrote about this yesterday, but — for those of you who prefer your information in tidy audio-visual form and/or those who were disappointed not to see actual footage from Tuesday night’s scrimmage — here’s the Redskins.com TV piece on the upcoming Redskins Wives vs. Eagles Wives charity basketball game.

So By Definition This Is A Portent Of Success, Right?

Posted by Matt Terl on October 1, 2010 – 9:37 am

Last week, a fellow named @DrKChap pointed out to me on Twitter that all the ESPN “experts” had picked the Redskins over the Rams. This was, we agreed, a bad thing — bad enough that when I posted about it, the headline I went with was “A Probable Omen Of Doom For Sunday”. This turned out to be sadly accurate.

Well, this week @DrKChap let me know about this:

Yep. All ten ESPN experts are swinging the other way and picking the Eagles.

This does not carry with it an inherent guarantee of victory, of course. Last week four teams were unanimously picked on ESPN.com, and only one failed to deliver. (HINT: it was the Redskins.) But if last week was an omen of probable doom, I’m calling this a portent of success. Why not.

Hail! Congratulates Phillip Daniels

Posted by Matt Terl on October 1, 2010 – 8:44 am

Phillip Daniels has had a good week, starting with a blocked field goal in last week’s game against the Rams and culminating with the announcement that his son DaVaris — one of the most highly-touted wide receiver prospects in the country — had committed to Notre Dame. And now Hail! writer-artist Ben Ceccarelli has elected to cap that off not only by featuring Daniels in this week’s comic strip, but by having him teach Cartoon Me a very special lesson.

As always, click the first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.
