A Field Trip To The Capitol

Posted by Matt Terl on September 28, 2010 – 4:53 pm

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and tight end Chris Cooley were at the U.S. Capitol today, representing the Redskins at the announcement of a major initiative to combat obesity bringing together the five major D.C. sports teams and Coca-Cola.

Snyder and Cooley each spoke briefly on the epidemic of childhood obesity (as you can see above), as did Mark Lerner and Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals, and Ted Leonsis of the Wizards, Mystics, and Capitals, and Crystal Langhorne (of the Mystics, speaking for the Caps’ Nicklas Backstrom and Wizards’ Josh Howard as well).

All five teams will host fitness events in the D.C. area — in many places a hotbed of childhood obesity — and this was the kickoff event. It was unique to see representatives from all five teams in one place especially in service of such an important message, and — if you’re a fan of the local sports scene — it was, frankly, pretty cool.

Here, though, is a picture of Cooley studiously ignoring a screaming guy carrying a sign and wearing Superman Underoos over his clothes; more pictures are after the jump.

Aside from the injury to the punter (which is weird enough on its own) and his replacement by kicker Graham Gano, the special teams unit’s day included the following occurrences, good and bad:

  • a punt blocked
  • a block of a field goal
  • a kickoff out of bounds
  • a turnover forced
  • a penalty for lining up offsides on a kickoff

There may be one or two others that I missed, but it gives the flavor of the thing. So yesterday I asked special teams stalwart H.B. Blades for a few of his thoughts on the strange, frustrating day that was. Read more »
