Mike Shanahan Appreciates DeAngelo Hall’s Enthusiasm

Posted by Matt Terl on September 20, 2010 – 4:17 pm

Head coach Mike Shanahan’s press conference today featured one really crucial bit of information: the MRI on rookie left tackle Trent Williams’ knee came back negative, which is a good thing. They’re still waiting for information on his toe, but it seems like Redskins fans — and the team’s quarterback — can cautiously exhale.

The second-most crucial bit of information was probably that, if Williams can’t go this week, it hasn’t yet been determined which tackle position Stephon Heyer would play and which one Jammal Brown would play.

But the part I was most interested in was his response to DeAngelo Hall‘s comments from earlier today, and Shanahan didn’t disappoint. Read more »

Joey Galloway Does An Excellent Job Giving An Uninformative Interview

Posted by Matt Terl on September 20, 2010 – 1:45 pm

Whether you love DeAngelo Hall or hate him, there are two things about him that are undeniable: he wears his heart on his sleeve and he’s a terrific quote. In fact, those two things are probably the very reasons that you either love or hate him. For my part, I love it. I believe Hall’s want-to-win is genuine, and I love his willingness to break out of the box of athletespeak and say what’s on his mind.

That said, it’s probably for the best that not everyone in the locker room shares that latter trait. Take Joey Galloway, for example.

Galloway was kind of a significant character in Sunday’s game. He caught three passes for 88 yards, including a 62 yard bomb, after a week in which every talk radio guy on the planet was criticizing his presence on the roster. And, on the negative side, he was thisclose to catching a gamebreaking touchdown from Donovan McNabb in the fourth quarter — just another of those plays that could’ve iced the game.

And yet his availability in open locker room today was a master class in how an athlete can efficiently deal with the media and answer every question without winding up with a money quote generating controversy on ProFootballTalk.

I stuck around for three minutes of the availability and walked away completely and non-ironically awed at how effectively and pleasantly Galloway said virtually nothing. Check out this transcript: Read more »

DeAngelo Hall Is Not Short On Confidence

Posted by Matt Terl on September 20, 2010 – 12:48 pm

Very few people on earth would argue that Andre Johnson isn’t one of the best receivers in football at the moment. Fantasy football players everywhere made Johnson one of the first two receivers taken in their drafts. Redskins cornerback Phillip Buchanon went to great lengths to explain how talented Johnson is in the run-up to yesterday’s game, and returned to the point in the postgame locker room. Even Johnson’s stat-line from last night would seem to be beyond question: 12 receptions for 158 yards and one crucial touchdown.

DeAngelo Hall doesn’t see it exactly like that. Read more »
