If you’re attending Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, please bring a new children’s book to donate to the Redskins Read Children’s Book Drive. These books will go directly to underserved youth in the greater Washington, D.C. region; there will be collection bins all around the stadium.
For two years running now, I’ve asked players in the locker room to recommend their favorite children’s books, and for two years running almost everybody (except Fred Smoot) has recommended Green Eggs & Ham. I like Green Eggs & Ham just fine, although it’s far from my favorite Dr. Seuss book, but I was getting a little of tired of it as a recommendation.
Still, at year three something like this becomes a tradition (and therefore a moral imperative), so I figured I’d give it another shot.
Things did not start promisingly with Phillip Buchanon. “When I was a little kid, man, it was all about Sam I Am,” he said. “Green Eggs & Ham was my favorite one I can think of.”
