Redskins vs. Cowboys – Fourth Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 11:42 pm

Well, that has to be the weirdest way to win a game in history: what should’ve been the game-losing touchdown is negated by a holding penalty, which — because it was an offensive penalty on the last play of the game — means the game is over.

Whatever. The Redskins are 1-0 for the first time since the 2007 season, and won their first NFC East game since week 16 of 2008. I’ll take it.

I’m off to the locker room — if it’s anything like the halls of FedExField that I can hear, it should be a pretty jubilant place. Read more »

Redskins vs. Cowboys – Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 10:45 pm

So the specialists are struggling this evening. No argument there. The two big plays of the third quarter both involved Josh Bidwell, and not in a good way. First Bidwell had trouble handling the snap for what should’ve been a chip-shot field goal; then he mis-hit a ball from the shadows of his own goalposts and gave the Cowboys a very short field — a very short field that ended in a touchdown for Dallas.

Like I said, no argument with any of that.

Here’s where the argument comes in: Read more »

Redskins vs. Cowboys – Second Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 9:58 pm

A confounding quarter. The Redskins finish it trailing in the following categories:

  • Rushing yards, 51-29
  • Passing yards, 131-88
  • Third down efficiency, 50% – 33%
  • Total net yards, 177-117
  • Time of possession, 19:09-10:51

The Redskins, on the other hand, lead in the following very important category:

  • Points,10-0

And a few others:

  • Sacks, 1-0
  • Takeaways, 1-0
  • Points off takeaways, 6-0

DeAngelo Hall continues to have an excellent game, scoring the Redskins’ first fumble-return touchdown since the late Sean Taylor did it in 2006, and doing it in style just as the half expired to give the Redskins their first touchdown against the Cowboys in 12 quarters.

There’s still plenty of cause for concern, of course. Read more »

Redskins vs. Cowboys – First Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 9:01 pm

That felt like a fast first quarter of football, and the main thing that struck me is the atmosphere here in FedExField. After a full week of build-up, I was worried that much of the energy that would usually be reserved for the game would’ve evaporated. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Like, at all.

I was on the sideline for player introductions, and the volume when Clinton Portis and Chris Cooley were introduced seemed deafening. Then Donovan McNabb, quarterback out of Syracuse, was announced. He stepped out of the helmet and paused for a second, soaking it all in. For a guy who has been booed a lot — since the day he was drafted — the cheers had to feel pretty good. Then he pointed to the sky as the cheers got, somehow, louder, and he ran to the center of the field.

I’m not usually a big one for what I think of as cliched sports drama, but it was a very cool moment.

Other notes from the quarter:

Follow The Redskins On Foursquare

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 4:13 pm

That up there is a Redskins foursquare badge.

Follow the Redskins on foursquare and check-in at FedExField or a Redskins Bar to unlock the Redskins Badge. You could win a pair of Loge tickets or an opportunity to tailgate with the Geico Caveman. UPDATE: Apparently you must follow “redskinsdotcom” on foursquare and then check-in to unlock the badge or else you won’t get it.

Dexter Manley Leads A Pregame Parade

Posted by Matt Terl on September 12, 2010 – 2:55 pm

Pretty much by definition, you’re not going to be able to capture the pageantry of a parade in still pictures. The music really doesn’t come through, nor does, you know, the actually parading motion. So I’ll post a video of this as soon as possible. But for now let me tide you over with this.

Despite the rain, the parking lots have been steadily filling up with fans watching the games on the parking lot big-screens. And, at 2:00 today, Parade Grand Marshall Dexter Manley led a procession of Redskins Alumni, Redskins Cheerleaders, and the Redskins Marching Band out to visit those fans. Check it out: Read more »
