Hope To See You This Weekend: A Schedule Reminder

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 4:35 pm

I’m looking forward to seeing any of you in the area to send off the team on Saturday morning from 10:00 to noon. There’ll be chances to win free tickets for the best dressed and best decorated car, and probably other prizes as well. And, as I mentioned yesterday, the long-tenured members of the Washington Redskins Marching Band are being honored for their years of meritorious service.

After noon tomorrow, I’ll be driving around the entire DC Metro area, and I’ll be tweeting locations where I’ll be handing out a few free tickets to Sunday night’s game. So be sure to follow me on Twitter, and keep an eye on that feed tomorrow.

And — for those who really like to plan ahead — here’s a full rundown of Sunday’s gameday events as it stands right now: Read more »

Other Offensive Linemen Have Confidence In Trent Williams

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 2:20 pm

Redskins rookie Trent Williams is pretty philosophical about the fact that his first regular season blocking assignment will likely come against Cowboys four-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware.”It would be easier to start off with someone not as good,” Williams said, “but it sets the stage.”

More than that, though, it can set the tone for the rest of his season — or longer. The offensive linemen I talked to all remembered the first big-name guy they lined up across from, and they all said they learned from the experience.

“My first game was against Carolina,” Jammal Brown said. “Julius Peppers. We went out there and won. No sacks, no pressures.”

“It was Jason Taylor,” Stephon Heyer said. “We ended up winning that game, I ended up doing pretty good.”

Artis Hicks also faced off against Taylor early in his career. “He was still in his prime in Miami,” Hicks said. “He was coming off another Pro Bowl year, a high digit sack number, and there I was, a young guy. I just remember thinking, Man! y’know? This is the real deal.

And there’s something to be gained from knowing you can compete in that real deal. Read more »

Redskins Employees Cheer The Team For Dallas Week

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 1:53 pm

This isn’t a picture that’s been taken before, I don’t believe. You can click to enlarge it and examine it more closely, but here’s what you’ll see: a big chunk of the staff at Redskins Park — folks from the business side of the building, marketing people, administrative assistants, and more — decked out in gold Beat Dallas shirts, cheering the team as they head into the building from the practice fields.

It was an unusual scene, but that doesn’t make it an unwelcome one. “This is the first time since I’ve been here where the organization’s involved — not just the team and the coaches, but the business side — for something like this,” linebacker Andre Carter said. “It brings the whole organization together, and you’ve gotta have that. It was great.” Read more »

Redskins Cheerleaders On The Today Show

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 12:13 pm

Here are four Redskins cheerleaders performing on this morning’s Today Show while country music duo band Sugarland performs their rendition of the Sunday Night Football theme song.

That’s Chelsea, Dawn, Jamilla, and Tracy dancing there; you can catch more of them (and the rest of the Redskins cheerleaders) at a bunch of this weekend’s events and at the games, and Chelsea also serves as co-host (with DeAngelo Hall) of Inside The Redskins, airing at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings on NBC-4.

(Given that the Today Show also airs locally on NBC-4, I wonder if Chelsea felt more at home than the other three.) Read more »

One Of The Loudest Dallas-Hating Honks

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 10:20 am

There was a fair bit of honking by people who hate Dallas yesterday, but probably none of it was more impressive (in terms of sheer loudness) than the 2:00 Amtrak Acela Express train from Union Station to Boston. Check it out.

Not portrayed in the video: the random Union Station workers honking the horns of their golf carts as they drove back and forth past the signs. Yes, all of this this actually happened. Read more »

Hail! Gets Into The Spirit Of Dallas Week

Posted by Matt Terl on September 10, 2010 – 8:52 am

Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli‘s cartoonified depictions of the Redskins players are always spot-on visually, but the players’ personalities are occasionally (and understandably) tweaked in service of the four-panel comic strip format. That is not the case with Rocky McIntosh. Today’s strip marks the second time (here’s the first) that Ceccarelli has writter a cartoon McIntosh that remarkably like the real one.

(Then again, it’s not like the vision portrayed in this week’s strip is exclusive to Rocky McIntosh. I imagine most Redskins fans have similar hopes. Still, nice work, Ben.)

As always, click this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest.
