Loudoun County Takes Redskins Week Very Seriously Indeed

I attended three proclamations of Redskins Week yesterday, in two states and the District of Columbia. The first two were lively affairs, more pep rally than official judicial proceeding. If those were the governmental equivalent of presenting the trophy for a fantasy football league, the final proclamation — at the Loudoun County Government Center in Leesburg last night — was more like a senate confirmation hearing.

If you flipped on NPR this morning, you might have heard about the local government meeting where the proclamation was made; it was also the site of the public hearing on religious displays on courthouse grounds. Sixty people were expected to speak on that subject, but before they got to that, the County Board of Supervisors had one other bit of business to discharge.
Here it is, as relayed through the County Boardroom’s flatscreen TV closed-captioning service:

Seeing three proclamations should’ve meant that I also saw three mayors’ bets. PG County staked a crab bomb from Jerry’s Seafood; D.C. offered half smokes from Ben’s Chili Bowl. Loudoun County was unable to make any such bet. They reached out to the mayor of Irving, Texas, but … well, I’ll let County Chairman Scott York explain it in the closed captioning.

Bruce Allen accepted a plaque of the proclamation on behalf of the team, and his thanks came in the form of a rousing exhortation to the fans. Here’s video, with transcription afterward for those who prefer old-fashioned text.

“Thank you so much for this. It means so much from your neighbors to have this type of support,” Allen said. Then, taking in the customized number 5 jersey that Chairman York was wearing, he added, “I promise all the Redskins fans: a different number 5 will be lining up Sunday night for the Washington Redskins.”

Allen continued, “I want you to save your voices, put the kids away early on Saturday. Rest up. Because we gotta yell, we gotta scream, we gotta make it the most raucous crowd in the history of the Redskins. Because we’re teaching a new generation of Redskins players and a new coach what this rivalry means to this community.

“Thank you for your support. Thank you for this. It’s very special, and Hail to the Redskins! Thank you.”
