Keiland Williams and Ryan Torain Are Okay With Uncertainty

Posted by Matt Terl on August 25, 2010 – 5:06 pm

The Redskins preseason running back situation has simultaneously become clearer and muddier, despite how little sense that seems to make. Clinton Portis has demonstrated — both through what he has been able to do, and what the other backs haven’t — that he should be the unquestioned starter on this team. Larry Johnson disappointed somewhat in the Ravens game, but he’s eager to prove himself again and is asking for more playing time. Willie Parker is slated to be the starter and get the bulk of the work Friday night, which will go a long way toward clarifying where he winds up on the depth chart.

Keiland Williams and Ryan Torain, meanwhile, just have to keep doing the best they can and hope the chips fall their way, even though they currently have no idea what they’ll be asked to do Friday night, or how many opportunities they’ll get. And, really, they’re both fine with that.

Chris Hanburger Finally Inching Toward Canton

Posted by Matt Terl on August 25, 2010 – 2:36 pm

Russ Grimm’s enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame early this summer was primarily a joyous occasion. If there was one small underlying unhappy element, it was that Grimm was likely to stand for all of the Hogs in Canton, and that — in fact — there was no immediately obvious next Redskin to enshrine.

But one of the names that was brought up was Chris Hanburger’s. “We need Chris Hanburger in the Hall of Fame,” Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said, according to the Washington Post, before enumerating a few of Hanburger’s accomplishments: “Nine Pro Bowls, defensive MVP of the NFL….”

The list of Hanburger’s accomplishments is long, and perhaps summed up best by the Info page of the Facebook group championing his entry into the Hall: Read more »

Devin Thomas Is A Big Arnold Schwarzenegger Fan

Posted by Matt Terl on August 25, 2010 – 12:24 pm

Photos of (often-shirtless) Devin Thomas and his tattoos were nearly unavoidable this offseason, from his bizarre photo shoot to his Twitter background to his other marginally-less-bizarre photo shoot. So when I was working on a (still upcoming) post that deals with tattoos, Thomas was an obvious guy to talk to.

His tattoo of the Predator has already generated a fair bit of press, but he’s added a couple of new pieces this offseason to complement it. He’s got a Spartan from the graphic novel that inspired the movie 300 on his chest, a nod to his Michigan State roots, which is understandable and actually pretty cool.

But the real pièce de résistance stretches down the right side of his ribcage, opposite the Predator. “That’s Conan,” Thomas says, before launching into the Crush your enemies! bit of dialogue from the movie. (A movie, it should be noted, that is four years older than Thomas himself.)

It’s very clearly Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie Conan, not — unlike the Spartan — the comic book version. “Yeah,” Thomas says. “And I got the Predator” — another Schwarzenegger movie — “on the other side. I got my favorite movies: Conan, Predator, and 300.”

So essentially, the Redskins’ third-year wide receiver has the governor of the state of California tattooed on his ribcage.

“I mean, basically, yeah,” Thomas says, laughing, when I point this out to him. “But it’s him in his portrayal from the movie. It’s not, you know, a political endorsement.”

Yes, there’s a picture of the tattoo after the jump.
