Danny Smith Looking For The Best Guy

When the Redskins added long snapper James Dearth to the roster today, I just sort of naturally assumed that it had meant the release of long snapper Nick Sundberg. This, as you can see from the picture above, was incorrect. “You know, you feel good about veterans,” special teams coach Danny Smith explained, “but I’m not opposed to a rookie if he can do it. All we did was establish competition at the position and we’ll keep the best guy.”

A number of people have asked me if the team has considered bringing back longtime long snapper Ethan Albright, so I put that question to Coach Smith. Read more »

Chris Cooley Helps Anthony Armstrong Celebrate

I’ve been writing this blog for two full seasons now, and I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to write about not one, not two, but THREE different touchdown celebrations in one game. You’ll forgive me, I hope, for milking this one.

ANYHOW, Anthony Armstrong‘s touchdown was probably the most important of the bunch: it was the first-team offense’s first score. It was Donovan McNabb‘s first touchdown as a quarterback for the Redskins. And it capped off a solid drive and set the tone for the rout the evening became.

It was also a huge deal for Armstrong himself, his first touchdown at the NFL level. Armstrong, as I’ve written about endlessly, came up the hard way in the NFL, through any number of smaller football leagues and NFL practice squads. Every step closer he gets to an active regular season roster is a major victory for him, so — for him, at least — the fact that this touchdown came in preseason doesn’t make it any less important. Quite the opposite, actually.
