Fred Davis Finishes The Play

Posted by Matt Terl on August 14, 2010 – 11:39 am

Fred Davis’s touchdown took place about as far as physically possible from my seat in the pressbox last night. Opposite sideline, opposite side of the field. So it was a little tough to see, but when Rex Grossman released the ball, I had a series of thoughts that went something like this:

  1. 1) Why would you throw that?
  2. 2) That’s gonna be a pick.
  3. 3) That might, in fact, be a touchdown the other way.
  4. 4) Even if that guy misses it, it’s gonna be uncatchable.
  5. 5) Seriously, why would you throw that?
  6. 6) Hey, that guy missed it.
  7. 7) And Davis caught it.
  8. 8) And … got his feet down inbounds?
  9. 9) And somehow scored a touchdown?
  10. 10) But … that was geometrically impossible?
  11. 11) What on earth kind of dance is that?

(Obviously, I think very quickly.) Still, it was far away and hard to see, so I assumed that I had misread the play. Then I watched the replay online (and have since seen it again on TV) and … no, I was pretty much dead on. The angles make no sense on that pass, and I have no idea how it wasn’t intercepted. DeAngelo Hall Finds This Win Both Special And Vanilla

Posted by Matt Terl on August 14, 2010 – 1:11 am

DeAngelo Hall knows what this win against the Buffalo Bills means: not very much. “You take it for what it’s worth,” Hall said after the game. “It’s a preseason game. It’s the first one. They’re probably rusty, we’re rusty. Guys got camp legs still, so I mean, there’s a lot of things that went into this game. We just showed a little bit of stuff, very vanilla, but we’re happy about the success we had.”

Right. Rusty team, probably one of the worst in the NFL. Camp legs. Vanilla offenses. Best to temper expectations and not go completely crazy, right?

Well, not exactly.

About Brandon Banks And John Wall

Posted by Matt Terl on August 14, 2010 – 12:13 am

When Brandon Banks took that third quarter punt back 77 yards for a touchdown, he finished by doing the John Wall Dance, as popularized by the Wizards’ first-round draft pick. I assumed that this was just because, well, that’s what D.C. athletes are gonna be doing to celebrate now that Wall is in town, but it turns out to be a little bit more than that: Banks and Wall, it transpires, are old friends.

“We grew up in a little community together,” Banks said. “We’re real, real tight. We talk back and forth. That’s my homeboy.” Read more »
