Anthony Armstrong And Chris Cooley Discuss Today's Practice

Posted by Matt Terl on August 10, 2010 – 4:11 pm

The focus of today’s practice (aside from the sweltering, oppressive heat) seemed to be the continued installation of the team’s goal line offense. This seemed very important to me — scoring from the goal line seemed like a consistent challenge for the Redskins teams of the last two years — and it was good to see the first-team offense performing well.

Then I talked to Chris Cooley — who, yes, was involved in at least a few goal line plays — and he pointed out that, in fact, goal line plays are sometimes completely useless. Like, say, when you’re not at the goal line.

This is Paula Otto, Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery. She was at practice today doing the media rounds to promote the new Redskins Legacy scratcher tickets. The game, she says, is off to a tremendous start and is on its way to raising “several million dollars” for Virginia public school.

The prizes include three separate one million dollar winners (“We only gave away one last year,” Otto notes, “so hopefully we’ll give away all three this year.”) as well as Redskins memorabilia, club seats for a season, ten years of season tickets, and even trips to away games with the team.

Those trips with the team, Otto says, were a big hit last year.

Burgundy And Gold Steelers

Posted by Matt Terl on August 10, 2010 – 8:05 am

Up until Russ Grimm’s post-enshrinement party, this was my favorite moment from Hall of Fame weekend: four of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting offensive linemen wearing Grimm’s number 68 jersey in the stands to honor their former coach. It was an unnecessary, impressive tribute to a guy who hasn’t been part of their team for three full seasons.

“We had the jerseys made when he became a finalist for the first time,” Steelers guard Trai Essex told me, “and we brought them back out to show our support here.”
