The Exterior Of FedExField Has Been Improved As Well

Posted by Matt Terl on August 9, 2010 – 4:14 pm

If you pay attention to any Redskins-related media at all — and if you’re reading this, you probably do — you’re aware that this season will see the debut of high definition videoboards in the stadium. That’s the upgrade that’s getting all the press, which makes some kind of sense — it’s something that’s obviously been needed for some time, so people are excited about it.

But there’s been another major improvement at the stadium; it’s one that will be almost as apparent as the videoboards, although perhaps the need for it wasn’t as widely recognized: the landscaping outside of the stadium has been completely overhauled by Lasting Impressions Landscaping Contractors, a new business partner of the Washington Redskins.

I’m not gonna lie: it would never have occurred to me that planting burgundy-and-gold flowers and pruning some trees would make that much of a difference to the FedExField experience, but it most definitely does; this is the best the stadium’s looked, possibly since it opened.

And here are some more before and after pictures (although not in animated form) to prove it. Read more »

First Depth Chart Released

Posted by Matt Terl on August 9, 2010 – 2:22 pm

Apparently the Redskins play a preseason game this Friday. Which means that the game information packet was distributed today, which contains the first (semi-)public appearance of a team-produced depth chart. Which FURTHER means that Redskins.com has the first fully public depth chart.

And you can probably guess from the picture above that it offers either surprisingly good or surprisingly bad news about one Justin Tryon. Read more »

Fred Davis Catches Passes On His Knees

Posted by Matt Terl on August 9, 2010 – 1:05 pm

Zany drills have been sort of few and far between this training camp. Gone are the slip-and-slides, the dodgeball drills, the thrown pads of the last two years. This is probably a good thing, as there seemed to be no precise correlation between the zaniness of the drills and the team’s success on the field. Still, it was kind of nice to see something a little wacky today, specifically tight end Fred Davis kneeling on the field and catching lob passes from tight ends coach Jon Embree.

The Russ Grimm Enshrinement Afterparty (And A Canton Wrap-Up)

Posted by Matt Terl on August 9, 2010 – 8:45 am

In a weekend full of memorable moments, this picture captures far and away the most memorable. At the post-enshrinement party for Russ Grimm — with a 5 O’Clock Club sign behind the bar and cans of beer readily available — the Hogs who were present gathered around their old coach and posed for a few pictures. From left to right, that’s Rick “Doc” Walker, Donnie Warren, George Starke, Joe Bugel brandishing his rings, Russ Grimm, and Joe Jacoby looming over Jeff Bostic.

There were a few other photo ops — more players plus Joe Gibbs, for example — but if you were a fan of the Redskins of the 1980s, this was probably the gold standard. It wasn’t quite like being in the legendary 5 O’Clock Club shed after practice, I’m sure, but you could look at these guys and see the same camaraderie that they built in those days.

“Everybody talks about the 5 O’Clock Club,” Jacoby told Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin on ESPN 980 a couple of months ago. “Yes, there were guys out there having their cold beer, but there were also guys out there just to be out there. A lot of guys came out there to get things off their chest, let things air out.”

And Bostic added, “The 5 O’Clock Club, trust me, that was as big a part of our success….”

So it was a fitting symbol to invoke as the first of the Hogs was enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

More pictures of the party after the jump.
