Wale And Larry Johnson Are Watching Out For Each Other

Posted by Matt Terl on August 4, 2010 – 3:22 pm

Last time we checked in with D.C.-born hip-hop star Wale (pronounced wah-LAY), he was performing a couple of his hits at halftime of the Dallas game in a throwback Redskins jacket. That was back in 2009, as things were cratering out for that star-crossed squad, in a contest that I described at the time as “another disappointing game in a continually disappointing season.”

But it’s 2010 now, time to put the past away and look forward into a brave new future of awesomeness. So when Wale showed up at training camp today, I asked him what he had seen that gave him hope. “I actually haven’t had a chance to see too much,” he said. “But we were trying to get on the field ourselves. You know, I live vicariously through a couple of these people, man.”

I did know this. I did a fairly wide-ranging interview with Wale about his Redskins fandom last year, but running back Larry Johnson wasn’t on the team then, so I was surprised to hear that was one of Wale’s pals on the team.

“I was actually friends with him before he became a Redskin,” Wale told me. “I’m excited to get him in town, and I’m here to keep him out of trouble.” Read more »

Specialists Receive Mixed Reviews

Posted by Matt Terl on August 4, 2010 – 2:10 pm

Today was the first practice day that actually FELT like training camp, at least from the oppressive-heat-and-humidity standpoint. A whole mess of players — including Santana Moss, London Fletcher, Clinton Portis, Joey Galloway, Larry Johnson, and Jammal Brown — were given the day off to rest, and watched their teammates from the sidelines. Albert Haynesworth wasn’t practicing today, and I can only hope that some intrepid media outlet will find out why not. As a result, the practice felt a little sluggish at points, a little ragged at others.

The most interesting part, in fact, came afterwards. Special teams coach and all-around excellent talker Danny Smith held court for a bit, and in the process gave the end-of-week-1 reviews of his three specialists. And those reviews were decidedly mixed.

Daniel Snyder Talks Tailgating (Among Many Other Things)

Posted by Matt Terl on August 4, 2010 – 8:30 am

The Redskins.com staff — that’s Gary Fitzgerald, Larry Weisman, and me — got a chance to sit down with owner Daniel Snyder yesterday for a rambling, pleasant interview that covered all sorts of topics. Probably the biggest takeaway were Snyder’s plans to build a Redskins Museum and indoor practice facility in Ashburn “in the near future,” but that wasn’t the bit that I was most interested in.

What I was intrigued by were the allusions to Daniel Snyder, former tailgater. Read more »

John Beck Fields Five Feldy Questions

Posted by Matt Terl on August 4, 2010 – 7:31 am

New Redskins quarterback John Beck is a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so it would be natural to ask if he ever sang in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Natural, and yet — based on the transcript — no one in his initial group interview session actually posed the question. Enter Fox-5’s Dave Feldman, who finds out the answer to that AND MORE!

What did Beck learn as an Eagle Scout? Does he speak Portuguese? Does he remember the TV show Dallas?!?!?

But far and away my favorite answer here comes when Feldman asks Beck — who was selected by Miami in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft — who the biggest celebrity was that he spotted in South Beach. Read more »
