I’ve seen marriage proposals on stadium scoreboards. I’ve seen (and written about) a marriage proposal on the sidelines of FedExField. For sports fans of a certain stripe, there’s nothing more perfect than combining their love of the game with the love of their lives. But it’s very, very rare that two Pro Bowl players get involved in the proposing, and that’s what happened yesterday when training camp opened at Redskins Park.
The happy couple are Don Carter and Elizabeth Ellis, from Lexington, South Carolina. Carter came up with the idea and contacted the Redskins, who in turn contacted Chris Cooley, who happily agreed to be involved.
“Dude, I was actually nervous,” Cooley told me, laughing. He continued, “And he was pretty emotional about it, which of COURSE he was.It was funny because [the Redskins people] asked me to sign some autographs and they said ‘It’s him; sign some autographs and pretend like you’re not gonna do it,’ and of course I’m, like, staring at him the whole time I’m signing other people’s autographs. Just eyeballing him the whole time.”
The nerves, Cooley said, were not quite as bad as when he proposed to his actual wife — which is probably a good thing, honestly — but, he said, “it was really cool, and I was really excited for him. She was SO surprised.”
There was one other aspect that Cooley seemed to enjoy: “It was a nice ring! I opened the box, I was like, ‘Whoa, that guy did good.'”
Indeed. Congratulations to the happy couple, and to Cooley and Portis for helping them get there.
