It’s been awhile since my last photography course, but I suspect that my picture above — in which both principles are facing completely away from the camera — is not exactly textbook work. And, on the surface, it’s not really even that interesting: it’s wide receiver coach Keenan McCardell throwing a pass to Malcolm Kelly as Kelly comes out of an agility drill. It’s the kind of thing that happens before every practice.
But it seemed a little significant today — and worth using this mediocre photo — because of a number of reports that started circulating pre-practice that Kelly had suffered some kind of hamstring injury at Donovan McNabb’s ‘Hell Week’ and would miss (depending on what you read) one or two or three practices.
Those reports, Kelly told me, were not precisely correct on all the specifics.
“I was out in Arizona,” he said, “we were all out there working out, you know, throwing and catching with Donovan, I was just running and stuff like that and when I got to throwing and stuff, the first day I got out there I just kinda tweaked it. I went on and ran the next day and then the next few days I just rested it, you know. But it ended up being good. I was able to go today so we’ll just see how it carries over till tomorrow.”
And, he explained, he wasn’t nursing it or holding back for most of today. “When I went, I went full speed,” he said, “and then it just started to tire out a little bit you know so I just kinda chilled out a little bit.”
Head coach Mike Shanahan, for his part, didn’t sound overly concerned about Kelly’s injury. “I didn’t get a chance to really look at him,” Shanahan said, in his post-practice remarks. “I know his hamstring is a little bit sore. I know he wanted to push through it. I talked to him earlier today. Hopefully there is no setback because he missed a number of OTAs with a hamstring earlier so hopefully he can get some reps.”
As Kelly notes, we’ll see what happens tomorrow, but today he got his reps. And as far as Hell Week, Kelly said he wouldn’t change anything. “Oh it was definitely worth it,” he said, adding. “Even Santana [Moss] was saying it’s more like a rehearsal now being that we did it last week, so it’s good. It worked out pretty good.”
