Mike Shanahan Golfs With Redskins Greats

Posted by Matt Terl on July 16, 2010 – 3:52 pm

When I talked to Rick “Doc” Walker about his idea for a Redskins Alumni Match Play Golf Tournament, he listed Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien as the Redskins alum who was the best golfer, because he had golfed competitively in the public eye.

“The only guy I know that’s done it publicly, under pressure, is Rypien,” Walker told me. “I don’t know if Joe [Theismann]’s done it to that level. For me, that’s the whole thing. If you do it publicly, that makes you as close to a semi-pro as anything I can think of. Everybody else, we don’t know if they’re picking up the ball [or something], but when Ryp did it, it was in competition.”

Well, Doc might need to revise his rankings.

Not only did Theismann (on the left above) golf competitively in public (at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada), he did so in a group WITH Rypien (on the right) and current Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan (center). I think it’s safe to say that SOMEone would’ve noticed if Theismann was picking up the ball or something.

That said, the oddsmakers agree with Doc’s overall assessment. Read more »

Fred Davis And Malcolm Kelly Are Ready To Be Veterans

Posted by Matt Terl on July 16, 2010 – 9:48 am

When Fred Davis showed up in the Wizards’ video welcoming John Wall to DC, I was a little surprised to think of the third-year tight end as an elder statesman of the D.C. sports scene. And I’m not the only one. Fan emails regularly refer to Davis, and fellow 2008 second-round draft choices Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas, by youth-based epithets like “the young receivers”.

It’s not just me and the fans. During the last mini-camp, someone from the local media asked new head coach Mike Shanahan about “the youngsters” at the receiver position, and Shanahan was overtly surprised at the description. “Well, ‘youngsters,'” he said, nonplussed, ” I think of youngsters as rookies. These are old veterans.”

The coach is right. This is their third year, generally thought of as the year when wide receivers establish themselves as pro players — if they’re ever going to. And, amidst suggestions that the Redskins lack under-25 talent, these three 24 year-olds are likely to going to have to be contributors on the field for the team to establish a new offensive attack.

Fortunately, while it’s taken some time for those of us who don’t play the game to get used to the idea of Fred Davis, grizzled veteran, the players themselves know that they’re going to be expected to perform like NFL veterans.

“I mean, shoot,” Kelly told me, “we HAVE to.” Read more »

The Gucci Saga, Part 3, In Hail!

Posted by Matt Terl on July 16, 2010 – 9:19 am

Quick programming update: I’m still largely on “vacation,” where “vacation” is a synonym for “helping to take care of an infant and a sometimes-cranky new big sister”. While I’ll have another post (or maybe two) up today, regular service won’t be resumed until early next week. But Ben Ceccarelli, the writer/artist/all-around-creative-genius behind Hail!, has no such new obligation (much to his relief, I’m sure). So the ongoing saga of Gucci the monkey continues without missing a beat.

As ever, click this first panel or the Read More link below to see the rest of the strip.
