Hail!, Now With Added Gucci

Posted by Matt Terl on July 2, 2010 – 12:24 pm

In case you weren’t following this blog back in September of 2009, here’s the relevant backstory: Redskins safety LaRon Landry has a monkey. Specifically, a white-faced capuchin monkey named Gucci, who visited Redskins Park on one memorable day. As you can imagine, this has become one of the more notable things about Landry, enough so that when Hail! writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli first introduced Cartoon Landry back in April, I immediately started campaigning for Cartoon Gucci to follow suit.

And now, at last, my pleas have been heard, in what might be my favorite installment of this comic strip yet.

As ever, click on the first panel (or on the Read More link) to see the rest of the strip.

Remembering Don Coryell By Way Of Joe Gibbs (UPDATED)

Posted by Matt Terl on July 2, 2010 – 10:47 am

Don Coryell passed away yesterday at the age of 85, surrounded by family. I didn’t know much about the great Chargers head coach, but everything I do know comes because he was one of Joe Gibbs’s coaches when Gibbs was a player, one of his mentors as a coach, and the man who introduced Gibbs at his enshrinement in the Hall of Fame in 1996. And when Gibbs — a coach I grew up rooting for, and whom I consider one of the all-time greats — said during his enshrinement speech, “I just got introduced by one of the greatest coaches of all time,” it was enough to tell me that Coryell must be a pretty impressive guy.

[UPDATE: Impressive enough that Coach Gibbs released this statement upon hearing of Coryell’s passing: “Don was a great leader and a great coach. The greatest testimony to that is what his players all thought about him. The loyalty they all had. When you played for him, which I did, you knew he put everything he had into the game plan. He had a great passion for what he did. He certainly had a huge impact on my thought process and coaching career and he bred an atmosphere of creativity. Here is a guy that was successful coaching at a small college, a major college, and two different pro stops. He truly was an icon in the coaching profession. We will all really miss him. His family is in our thoughts and our prayers.”]

Fourteen years ago almost to the day, Dan Daly of the Washington Times talked to Coryell in advance of Gibbs’s then-upcoming enshrinement, and I thought it might be appropriate to reprint an excerpt from that piece in honor of Coryell’s passing. Read more »
