DeAngelo Hall Goes To SeaWorld

Posted by Matt Terl on June 24, 2010 – 5:09 pm

When Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall tweeted a photo of himself with a sea lion earlier today, I — like many of you, I’m sure — found myself thinking Wow, if only that was higher resolution!.

Well, the kind PR folks at SeaWorld Orlando heard our silent cry and delivered not only pictures but video of Hall interacting with the sea lion (whose name is Clyde, and who sounds just like a wookie) and riding the park’s Manta roller coaster. (The Manta, according to the accompanying information, “seamlessly blends up-close animal encounters with a head-first, face-down thrill ride.” I’m not being at all sarcastic when I say that that sounds AWESOME.)

Here’s one of the pictures, featuring Hall, an awesome throwback Washington Senators T-shirt, and Clyde the sea lion. The rest of the pics, and the video, are after the jump.

Sonny Jurgensen Believes In Execution

Posted by Matt Terl on June 24, 2010 – 4:23 pm

During the bad days last season, back when one of the major Redskins topics who was doing the playcalling, the players had a tendency to drop into a simple refrain: the playcalling is fine, they would say, we just need to execute.

And it wasn’t just current players who said that. Ex-players joined in as well, including an ex-Eagles quarterback turned commentator: Ron Jaworski, who went on ESPN980 and said, “It’s not about the playcalling. It just seems to me it’s some sort of crutch right now that somebody wants to hang their hat on. It’s about the execution of plays that are called. It’s that simple.”

Well, that’s no longer the hot topic around the Redskins, but it’s apparently something that’s of great concern to ex-Eagles quarterbacks turned commentators. The Sporting News posted an interview with Redskins (and ex-Eagles) Hall of Fame QB Sonny Jurgensen today, and can you guess what Jurgensen said when asked how the game has changed since his day? SI.com Launches Haynesworthpalooza

Posted by Matt Terl on June 24, 2010 – 3:32 pm

Commenter joewtimmons was a bit upset yesterday that I didn’t write anything about Albert Haynesworth‘s statement that he intends to show up at training camp. I defended the decision by pointing out that Larry Weisman had it covered over on the Redskins.com mothership — and by saying (basically) that I was sick of the non-stop Haynesworth coverage.

You know who DOESN’T feel that way, though? SI.com. As I write this, their NFL frontpage features FOUR separate pieces that address the ongoing Haynesworth issue — I’ve helpfully circled them in the screenshot above. And one of them features no fewer than EIGHT separate current and retired NFL players weighing in on the subject. No one on the planet needs to read (or watch, as one of them is a video) that much about any one subject, especially when NOTHING OF NOTE has actually happened, so I’m helpfully providing excerpts here. Terrence Austin Finally Gets To Work

Posted by Matt Terl on June 24, 2010 – 12:39 pm

The mini-camp schedule really didn’t work out so great for Redskins rookie wide receiver Terrence Austin. NFL rules prohibit rookies from showing up before the end of final exams; because Austin went to UCLA, this meant that he was relatively late in arriving at camp. And once he finally showed up, the first day of mini-camp was cut short by the weather, the third day was canceled, and the second day featured the Alumni barbecue.

So there wasn’t really the occasion for a Terrence Austin Is Here moment. And the young receiver was just fine with that.
