Terrence Austin Will Not Be Completely Baffled

Posted by Matt Terl on June 11, 2010 – 2:56 pm

Since the Redskins drafted Terrence Austin in the seventh round, this YouTube reel is almost all we’ve seen of the return specialist from UCLA. His school finishes classes late, and NFL rules prohibit Austin from any workouts besides a single mini-camp until after final exams are complete

“We are trying to avoid interfering with a player completing his final semester at his school,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told writer Paul Domowitch in a Philadelphi Daily News Piece. “The players who want an education should not feel that they are at a disadvantage in competing for an NFL roster spot.”
But when Austin arrives, he won’t be entirely in the dark, thanks to the efforts of two of his former college teammates.

“I actually didn’t have this problem,” former Bruin Chris Horton explains. “I was a fifth year senior. So I had already graduated. It’s kinda hard on guys who get everything done in four years, and he didn’t redshirt, you know, he came in to play right away. The good thing, though, is that he’s got a teammate here, [undrafted rookie tight end] Logan Paulsen, who plays on the offensive side of the ball, who can, you know, help him out, and you know, with some playbook and reviewing plays and stuff like that.”

“I’m trying to just keep him updated,” Paulsen says. “Help him out with as much stuff as I can.”

According to Paulsen, this was a plan they had put in place back at UCLA. “Before we came out here, we said ‘Oh, you know, if any one of us gets something, then we need to help each other out.’ It’s hard to get him the stuff, but you try to give him the basic concepts and whatever else you can, because he really wants to be here real bad.”

And what can we learn about Austin from his two once and future teammates?

According to Paulsen, “He’s a really good guy, y’know? We didn’t really hang out a ton, but he’s a really nice guy, a very good person, and it’s easy to get along with him.”

Asked to describe Austin, Horton offers a similar analysis. “Terrance is just real quiet. You know he, he’s real reserved, and Logan’s almost the same way. I’ll tell you one thing: it’s good to have Bruins here.”

Or it will be, when he finally arrives next week.
