Vote For The Most Accurately-Rated Redskins Player

Posted by Matt Terl on June 4, 2010 – 10:00 am

It has been observed — not without some justification — that pretty much everything these days has been criticized as being either overrated or underrated. It’s a classic sports bar argument, and for good reason: you not only get to argue your own point, you get to argue that everyone else on Earth is WRONG in their interpretation of that point. That’s what sports bars are all about.

Anyhow: late last week Pete Prisco at CBSSports.com released his list of overrated and underrated players for all 32 NFL teams. His choices for the Redskins were LaRon Landry as overrated (“They missed on this high first-round pick..”) and Reed Doughty (“He played really well last season”) as underrated.

At ESPN.com’s NFC East blog, Matt Mosley offered his choices: Albert Haynesworth (“Based on his salary”) as overrated and Andre Carter as underrated.

All of that is well and good.

But Chuck Klosterman — pop culture critic, sometime ESPN.com contributor, guest on Bill Simmons’ podcasts — asked a question in this 2004 Spin Magazine column that’s similar, but vastly more interesting to me: who is the most ACCURATELY rated?

Klosterman was talking about “the ten most accurately rated artists in rock history” (and let’s leave aside the fact that his list hasn’t aged well at all. New Radicals at number 2? Really?), but the concept can just as easily be applied to the Redskins.

Here’s how Klosterman explains the criteria: “Nobody thinks they’re better than they are, and nobody thinks they’re worse. They have the acceptable level of popularity, they have attained the critical acclaim their artistry merits, and no one is confused about their cultural significance.”

“Cultural significance” may be a bit much to ask for an individual football player, but I’m sure you can see what I’m saying.

Rather than just offering my opinion on who the most accurately-rated Redskins player was, I reached out to an assortment of people who watch the team — some mainstream media, some bloggers, some fans — to see who they came up with. Read more »

Hail! Takes On The Uniform Controversy

Posted by Matt Terl on June 4, 2010 – 7:57 am

Well, it’s been a little less than a month since the last time we discussed potential uniform changes around these parts. The last time was in early May, after general manager Bruce Allen may have indicated that the team was considering incorporating gold pants into their uniforms and Reader Urko sent in his completely awesome rendering of such hypothetical pants.

With this week’s installment of Hail!, Ben Ceccarelli revisits that always-exciting topic, and also introduces comic strip Clinton Portis. And if there’s a better recipe for cartoon gold than Clinton Portis and gold pants, I can’t imagine what it would be. Now I’m just waiting for Ceccarelli to handle the controversial (and non-existent) black uniforms.

As always, click on this first panel (or on the Read More link) to see the rest of the strip.
