Someone Thinks The Redskins Have The Best Offensive Line In The NFC East

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2010 – 5:05 pm

The offseason is a time of unbridled joy and optimism. Everyone knows this. June is the month when all the offseason moves are going to work, all the draft picks are going to pan out, and every new coach is an innovative genius.

It’s just that usually, that sort of optimism is reserved for a team’s fans, not the commentators on a national radio show. But on The Sirius Blitz, which airs from 11a-3p ET on Sirius NFL Radio (Channel 124), Adam Schein and Jim Miller got more enthusiastic about the Redskins’ offseason moves than even the most optimistic Redskins die-hards I’ve heard.

And, in what can only be called a whiplash-inducing change from last season, all the praise was directed at the offensive line.

Who The Heck Is Richard Bartel?

Posted by Matt Terl on June 29, 2010 – 10:42 am

Saying that Richard Bartel is the forgotten man of the Redskins is not entirely accurate — becoming a forgotten man requires that people be aware of your existence in the first place. Bartel was signed the day before Thanksgiving last year to zero fanfare and even less notice. I tweeted about it, then mentioned the tweet in a bullet point on a short blog post on Black Friday. Not exactly a warm Redskins Blog welcome. I don’t think anyone came out and said it, but I’m guessing that at the time, most fans expected Bartel to be summarily dropped as soon as fan-favorite QB Colt Brennan came off Injured Reserve.

But that didn’t happen. And Bartel also stuck around after the new coaching staff arrived. And after the draft, and after the undrafted free agent tryout period, and through mini-camps and OTAs, and now it certainly looks like he’ll be here for training camp — a training camp, it should be noted, where head coach Mike Shanahan has been talking up the importance of competition.

So it seemed like it was finally time to catch up with Bartel and ask him, point blank, who he is.

Players React To The Devin Thomas Video Debut

Posted by Matt Terl on June 28, 2010 – 2:17 pm

So Devin Thomas‘s appearance in the latest Fantasia video made its internet debut this week, and whenever a player does something like this, the inevitable follow-up question is “Do you think your teammates are going to give you a hard time about it?” When word of Thomas’s R&B star turn broke a couple of weeks back, Dan Steinberg bowed to inevitability and asked, and, according to his report, Thomas believed that his teammates were “waiting to make fun of him next week, regardless of how his performance looks.”

It turns out that Thomas was absolutely correct about that. Read more »

Devin Thomas In Fantasia's Bittersweet Video

Posted by Matt Terl on June 28, 2010 – 12:05 pm

Oh, sure, Donovan McNabb and Fred Davis were in a video welcoming Wizards draft pick John Wall to D.C. But were they cast as the nameless love interest in a stylish R&B music video for the latest single by a former American Idol?

No they weren’t. And Devin Thomas was. Fantasia’s “Bittersweet” video debuted this week, and there’s Thomas. Here, look.

Thomas explained this side project to the DC Sports Bog earlier this month.

“She just needed a young sexy man in her video, and my name came up,” joked Thomas, who said he plays Fantasia’s fiance in the video. “This is my first time ever being in a video. It was a great opportunity, just to get a chance to be with somebody of her stature, to be a main role in her video.”

Mission accomplished — and I think Thomas actually acquits himself pretty well, all things considered. Read more »

Fred Davis and Donovan McNabb Welcome John Wall

Posted by Matt Terl on June 25, 2010 – 5:47 pm

That, my friends, is a screencapture of Redskins tight end Fred Davis performing the John Wall dance to welcome the Wizards first-round draft choice to town, alongside quarterback Donovan McNabb and host of other Washingtonians, famous and un-, in a video the Wizards put together.

It’s a little strange to think of the third year Davis and newly-acquired McNabb as the sorts of elder statesmen who should be welcoming the 19-year-old to town, but things move pretty fast in D.C. Heck, when Donovan McNabb was acquired on April 4, here’s where a few of his fellow dancers were:

  • Alex Ovechkin hadn’t even started the NHL playoffs yet
  • Stephen Strasburg was still a week away from his minor-league debut, let alone the first official Strasmas
  • Ryan Zimmerman’s inescapable Geico commercials hadn’t started airing
  • The DC version of Wax Michelle Obama hadn’t yet been unveiled

So, yeah, things just zip along in this town. By those standards, Fred Davis might as well be a proud Redskins alum from the 1970s.

And anyway, strange or not, this all actually happened. Check out the full video after the McNabb screencapture and the jump.

Colt Brennan Reaches Out To A Fan In Need

Posted by Matt Terl on June 25, 2010 – 2:30 pm

If you look carefully at Colt Brennan in the picture above, you’ll notice that he’s wearing a purple bracelet on his right wrist. It’s not just a fashion statement. The bracelet reads ‘Keep Fighting’ along with the letters SRB. Those are the initials of Sean Barnum, a 19 year old in Texas who was stabbed in the heart with a screwdriver last April.

“He was a high school quarterback,” Brennan told me, “looking to eventually go and work himself into a program somewhere. And I guess he was just a big fan of me when I was in college and — I guess he wore my number, too — and his brother-in-law [Justin Jemela] reached out to see if there’s anything I could do.”

Jammal Brown: 'I've Always Been A Hog'

Posted by Matt Terl on June 25, 2010 – 11:37 am

Newly-acquired Redskins offensive lineman Jammal Brown has been saying all the right things since he arrived in town, but perhaps never quite so many of them at one time as he did while on The LaVar Arrington Show With Chad Dukes yesterday. It’s a long, terrific interview, and you can listen to it here, but I’ve gone ahead and transcribed a few excerpts as well. Because if you’re a Redskins fan, this will get you pretty fired up — Dukes and Arrington are both pretty excitable guys by nature, but over the course of this interview, they both sounded ready to run through a brick wall.

DeAngelo Hall Comes To Hail!

Posted by Matt Terl on June 25, 2010 – 9:02 am

Fresh off his trip to Sea World yesterday, cornerback DeAngelo Hall drops in on Hail!, the official comic strip of this here blog. Every time an installment of this shows up, I’m hoenstly amazed by how well writer/artist Ben Ceccarelli captures the physical likenesses of the players. This week is no different — the facial expression in panel 2 is EXACT — but I’m a little sad that the pressure of deadlines and a quirk of timing prevented Ben from including Clyde the sea lion as well. I bet he could’ve really worked wonders with that handsome marine mammal.

As always, click on this first panel or the Read More link to see the rest of the strip.

DeAngelo Hall Goes To SeaWorld

Posted by Matt Terl on June 24, 2010 – 5:09 pm

When Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall tweeted a photo of himself with a sea lion earlier today, I — like many of you, I’m sure — found myself thinking Wow, if only that was higher resolution!.

Well, the kind PR folks at SeaWorld Orlando heard our silent cry and delivered not only pictures but video of Hall interacting with the sea lion (whose name is Clyde, and who sounds just like a wookie) and riding the park’s Manta roller coaster. (The Manta, according to the accompanying information, “seamlessly blends up-close animal encounters with a head-first, face-down thrill ride.” I’m not being at all sarcastic when I say that that sounds AWESOME.)

Here’s one of the pictures, featuring Hall, an awesome throwback Washington Senators T-shirt, and Clyde the sea lion. The rest of the pics, and the video, are after the jump.
