Mike Shanahan Updates A Few Past Blog Posts

Posted by Matt Terl on May 27, 2010 – 12:10 pm

I’m not saying that head coach Mike Shanahan was DELIBERATELY tailoring his post-OTA comments yesterday to things I’ve written about on the blog, but I think the evidence pretty clearly speaks for itself.

On Brandon Banks, who I wrote about here:

SHANAHAN: “I think he’s done a good job. He’s been an excellent returner, obviously not very big but very fast. We ran him in the forty and he broke 4.4 out here on this turf when the rookies ran. And he’s catching the ball extremely well as a wide receiver. So he’s competing right now and we’ll let time take care of itself. When he gets his opportunity in these preseason games, he’ll show us what he can do.”

On the impressive coaching being done by first-year position coach Keenan McCardell, which has come up repeatedly ’round these parts, but mainly here:

SHANAHAN: “You never know with players, especially with ex-players, because it’s such a grind. There are so many hours to put in. But Keenan has always been a student of the game. He has studied the game extremely well and he’s played extremely well. So when I first interviewed Keenan, I was kinda blown away with his knowledge of defenses and the way he’s handled himself. So I expect our receivers to get the best coaching possible because Keenan’s got that background. He’s a class act and he’s growing everyday at his position.”

Even on the remarkable size of Ma’ake Kemoeatu’s head, which I actually wrote about on two separate occasions:

[NOTE: The question was about if Kemoeatu's body type makes him an ideal nose tackle. This is the response from the beginning.]

SHANAHAN: “In fact, if you’ve looked at his helmet … I’ve never seen a helmet that big before. His helmet size is size 13, and the biggest one I think I’ve seen is a eight and a half, so that kind of gives you a little idea. But yes, he is a prototypical nose tackle. He’s working extremely hard; I think next week he’ll get more reps, but the key is getting ready for our summer camp, and without a question I think he’ll be ready to go.”

Having the tacit approval of the coach certainly helps with all of these things, but especially with Kemoeatu. I was still feeling kinda bad about that whole thing right up until yesterday’s press conference.
